Agriculture Ministry upbeat on second quarter exports By Thai Hang and Ngoc Hung – The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – The Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has pinned its hopes on growth in key products including rice, aquaculture products, coffee and rubber thanks to rising prices and high demand in the global market. The ministry recently revised the rice export target this year up to between 7.1 and 7.4 million tons, a rise of 1.1 million tons from the latest forecast at the end of last year. The country targets exporting two million tons of rice in the second quarter, after shipping 1.8 million tons abroad from January to March. Vietnam Food Association President Truong Thanh Phong told the Daily last week that exporters have signed contracts to deliver 1.6 million tons from April to June to buyers including Indonesia, Bangladesh and Singapore. Last week, Vietnam’s 5% broken rice price for the first time this year exceeded the same category of Thailand as the free on board price reached US$480 per ton.
