Christchurch to get mobile red light camera after decades without

STACY SQUIRES/STUFF Police can run red lights when heading to emergencies but why do so many Christchurch drivers think they can do the same? (Video first published in January 2019) Christchurch will get its first red light camera in decades – and one of just four across the country – after a report identified the city as NZ’s worst for stoplight runner crashes. The move comes as former prime minister Helen Clark issued a call to action on implementing working red light cameras across the country. Last week, Stuff revealed New Zealand had only three working fixed red light cameras – one in Wellington and two in Auckland – with all three operated by police. Christchurch once had cameras at 10 intersections, which were used in the late 1980s and 1990s. The Christchurch City Council is installing one camera at the Bealey Ave/Madras St intersection –  the city’s ninth most dangerousin 2017 .
