Love Island bosses came under fire from disgruntled viewers last year after contestants were constantly filmed puffing away on cigarettes. And while this year it seemed as if the villa’s balcony was the perfect place for the reality hopefuls to have an intimate chat, it was actually reserved for an altogether different reason. Hopefuls were told that the only place they were permitted to smoke was on the villa’s terrace, while viewers never got to see their favourites indulging in the unhealthy habit. Managing Director of ITV Angela Jain previously revealed that they wanted to eradicate smoking from the main communal areas of the villa. “We are treating it like smoking in a workplace,” she said. “Everyone’s used to it at home – you can’t smoke in a restaurant, you can’t smoke at home. So we just created a very clear separate area at the front of the villa. “There will be a camera on it but it won’t be as attractive a place to go into a huddle and have a conversation.” Head of ITV2 Paul Mortimer previously revealed that the team had been inundated with messages from viewers who did not approve of the contestants smoking on camera. He said: “More than 50% of complaints about the show were about people smoking.” Dani Dyer , Eyal Booker and Adam Collard from this year’s show are all believed to be smokers.
