Raheem Sterling is out of the England squad to face Spain and Switzerland with a back problem. Sterling played the full 90 minutes as Manchester City beat Newcastle on Saturday, scoring the opening goal for the Premier League champions. But he didn’t join up with the rest of the squad as they arrived at St. George’s Park on Monday evening. He has been withdrawn due to a lower back problem and Southgate has not called up an immediate replacement. England take on Spain at Wembley on Saturday before facing Switzerland at Leicester’s King Power Stadium. England’s players will take part in their first training session on Tuesday morning as they prepare for the encounter. Manchester United defender Luke Shaw joined the rest of the squad on Monday after his fine start to the season. He was joined by Joe Gomez, James Tarkowski, Adam Lallana and Alex McCarthy, who are all back in Southgate’s squad.
