This probably won't surprise you, but I am a huge "smart home" proponent. I have a couple of Echo Dot voice assistants, a Nest smart thermostat, several Wi-Fi security cameras, and I am even in the process of testing a smart sprinkler from Rachio. One of my favorite smart home devices, however, are my Wemo Mini Smart Plugs. If you aren't familiar, these are devices that plug into a power outlet, and then plug what you want to control into it. For instance, mine are connected to lamps, so using my phone or tablet, I can easily turn on/off the lights using the Wemo app -- even remotely. Even better, thanks to Alexa support, I can control my lighting by voice! I can say "Alexa, turn on the living room lamp," and like magic, it does! Recently, Wemo released a special bridge dongle that made its devices compatible with HomeKit -- Apple's smart home solution. The problem? That bridge can cost $30 or more -- ugh, who wants to pay extra? Thankfully, starting today, … [Read more...] about Wemo Mini Smart Plug now compatible with Apple HomeKit — no bridge needed!
Back in May, Sony launched a drop-dead gorgeous special edition PlayStation 4. Called "Days of Play," it featured a beautiful blue body, which was emblazoned with gold PlayStation button labels. I was quite smitten with the design, but there was one huge problem -- it wasn't a PS4 Pro. In other words, the special design was wasted on a console that wasn't Sony's most powerful. Today, Sony unveils a new limited edition console that puts the aforementioned "Days of Play" variant to shame. And yes, this time it is a PS4 Pro! The "Limited Edition Marvel's Spider-Man PS4 Pro Bundle," as it is called, features a PS4 Pro with a red body and massive white Spider-Man logo on the top. The "Amazing Red" color, which Sony is calling it, is also on the DualShock 4 wireless controller. Rounding out the bundle is the "Marvel’s Spider-Man" video game disc. "This special bundle includes a fully customized Amazing Red 1TB PS4 Pro console featuring the iconic Marvel’s … [Read more...] about Sony unveils Limited Edition Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 Pro Bundle
The LG G7 ThinQ is a nice phone. All the basics you’d expect in a 2018 flagship are there such as Snapdragon 845, glossy glass back with fast fingerprint sensor under the dual cameras, portrait mode (fake bokeh) and a tall narrow display with notch, however it’s arrived too late to the 2018 party. The LG G7 Thinq is a smartphone that is pleasant to use but lacks a certain “wow factor” to help it stand out from the crowd of strong competitors. The G4 was the last LG phone I spent money on and I loved the great camera: unfortunately it died a boot loop death after a year. To be fair LG tried to be different with its G5 modules but the lack of success has caused them to stick to the middle of the road since then. Microsoft has posted the results of the fourth quarter of its 2018 financial year, running up until June 30, 2018. Revenue was $30.1 billion (up 17 percent year-on-year), operating income was $10.4 billion (up 35 percent), net income was $8.8 billion (a rise of 10 percent), and earnings per share were $1.14 (an increase of 11 percent). This brings the full-year revenue to $110.4 billion (up 14 percent on the 2017 financial year), with operating income of $35.1 billion (up 21 percent) and net income of $16.6 billion, a drop of 35 percent, attributed to the impact of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act's $13.8 billion repatriation tax. Without that, the company would have been looking at a net income of $30.3 billion, up 18 percent on 2017. Microsoft currently has three reporting segments: Productivity and Business Processes (covering Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Skype, and Dynamics), Intelligent Cloud (including Azure, Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio, and Enterprise Services), and More … [Read more...] about Microsoft posts bumper Q4, with Windows, Surface, Azure all up
After holding on to second place in global smartphone market share for years, Apple might have a worthy challenger. During a product launch event this week, Huawei consumer division head Richard Yu Chengdong announced that the Chinese smartphone maker is on pace to ship 200 million smartphones by the end of 2018, which would put it within reach of overtaking Apple as the second biggest smartphone brand globally behind Samsung. To put that number into perspective, South China Morning Post reports that Huawei shipped 153.1 million handsets in 2017. That wasn’t nearly enough to top Apple’s 215.8 million shipments, but if Huawei really can hit 200 million sales just a year later, it stands to reason that Apple could be in third place by the end of 2019. Don't Miss: Amazon’s new Dyson cordless vacuum deal is so much better than anything we saw on Prime Day “Previously [we] reached the 100 million shipments mark on December 22, 2015, October 14, 2016 and … [Read more...] about Huawei says that it’s on pace to overtake Apple in smartphone sales by 2019
Jalopnik got bored earlier this week and decided to hit up the Bear Mountain Car Cruise, an enthusiast event that meets every Wednesday in the summer about an hour out of Manhattan. What we saw changed us forever, including an Alpine A110, Slantnose Porsche, Saab Sonnett, and a Toyota Sera that our hearts won’t let us forget. To our credit, we rolled up in a Yugo, a Lexus IS300 Sportcross, a Honda S2000, and a 2018 Honda Odyssey. We basically stole the show, sorry everyone else. … [Read more...] about Here Are Some Of The Incredible Cars Of The Bear Mountain Car Cruise
I read with interest the news that guests at Prince Louis’ recent christening were served slices of cake from Wills and Kate’s wedding seven years ago. Granted, their cake was a fruitcake, which has alcohol in it so that it keeps better than a standard American wedding cake. But it started me down a wormhole in which I discovered that some people bid on old slices of cake from royal weddings, as in this auction last month that featured slices from the nuptials of Charles and Diana, Andrew and Fergie, and Charles and Camilla, all going for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. The auction house’s CEO stressed, though: “They’re not edible.” Few of us have attended actual royal weddings (my wedding dress was $50 off the rack at Nordstrom), but many people partake in their own version of this royal ritual: saving the top layer of the wedding cake to pull out a year later for the first anniversary (if the couple makes it that far… fingers … [Read more...] about Is it safe to save your wedding cake for future anniversaries?
LAFC striker Adama Diomande wrote in an Instagram post that an opponent on the Portland Timbers called him “the ‘N’ word” during his team’s U.S. Open Cup match on Wednesday. Diomande came on in the second half as a substitute in his team’s 3-2 win, and while he exchanged a few words with Timbers players towards the end of the game, no altercation seemed out of the ordinary until his post. “Today was the first time in my professional career that I was called the «N» word on the field,” Diomande wrote. “They will say sorry to me after the game and please let it go, but If I don’t say anything racism will just continue to grow.” Diomande added that “the player (has) been reported.” It’s still unclear who that player is, though the incident might have occurred when an upset Diomande was involved in a very minor-seeming skirmish with several Portland players in the final minutes of the match. The … [Read more...] about LAFC’s Adama Diomande Says Portland Timbers Player Called Him The N-Word During Game
The 2019 Suzuki Jimny has just been redesigned for the first time since dinosaurs ruled the Earth, but it’s still the same square and plucky international off-roader we know and love. Watch it frolic and fight its way through assorted obstacles here. A highlighter yellow off-roader, calm adult contemporary music... as our Managing Editor Erin Marquis said, there’s nothing to not love about this video. And with two solid axles, a ladder frame and a delightfully short wheelbase, there’s nothing to not love about the Jimny, either. I mean, as long as the driving you’re doing is exactly like what you’re watching here. I’m not sure what the Japanese title cards and fine print read, but it’s probably something like “driving like an idiot will void your warranty.” Anyway, the Jimny is still a great reason to move anywhere outside America. I want one something fierce and after watching this, I’m sure you do too. Truck Yeah The … [Read more...] about Watch the 2019 Suzuki Jimny 4×4 Live Its Best Life
