Sure, Keurig and Tassimo machines make it easy to enjoy a nice, hot beverage in the morning. But what about those rare occasions when you want to kickstart your day with a nice, frosty bowl of ice cream? You could scoop a little from a container, sure. But why settle for store-bought when you could press a button and enjoy freshly-prepared soft serve instead? If LG has their way, that might be a reality in the very near future. At SXSW this year LG is showing off a new countertop appliance that they’re calling SnowWhite (for now, anyways), The Verge reported. It’s a compact machine that that uses a pair of pods to whip up frozen treats in a flash. LG unveiled its prototype personal ice cream maker, SnowWhite, which uses specialized capsules, at SXSW. (Photo Credit: LG) Snow White can make more than just ice cream. Its “base texture” pods can produce frozen custard, frozen yogurt, gelato, granita (similar to Italian ice, but coarser), sherbet, and sorbet. We probably don’t need to tell this to the average Hackaday reader, but we’re living in a largely disposable society. Far too many things are built as cheaply as possible, either because manufacturers know you won’t keep it for long, or because they don’t want you to. Of course, the choice if yours if you wish to you accept this lifestyle or not. Like many of us, [Erik] does not. When the painted markings on his stove become so worn that he couldn’t see them clearly, he wasn’t about to hop off to the appliance store to buy a new one. He decided to take things into his own hands and fix the poor job the original manufacturers did in the first place. Rather than paint on new markings, he put science to work and electroetched them into the metal. Whether or not you’ve got a stove that needs some sprucing up, this technique is absolutely something worth adding to your box of tricks. Using the same methods that [Erik] did in his kitchen, you could … [Read more...] about How Do You Etch Something You Can’t Move?
LG makes a lot of different products. Really, the list of things it doesn’t make might be shorter than the list of things it does. There are gaps, naturally, but home brewing is no longer one of them. Yes, beer drinkers, LG wants to help you brew your own beer! The company pulled back the curtains on a countertop brewing appliance — fittingly called LG HomeBrew — this week and they’ll be taking it to Las Vegas in January to show it off to CES attendees. LG’s machine prioritizes convenience above all else. It’s a Keurig-like system that can produce up to five gallons at time. To brew a batch of beer you simply pop in a pod, add water, and press a button. The appliance maintains temperature and pressure levels to ensure optimal brewing conditions. Like many of LG’s other appliances, HomeBrew has built-in wireless connectivity. You can check on the progress of your beer at any time by launching the companion app on your phone or tablet. … [Read more...] about LG Is Making a Countertop Beer Brewer

Get ready for smart toilets that'll scan your poop using artificial intelligence to save you a trip to the doctor. That's what Sanjay Mehrotra, chief executive of memory chipmaker Micron Technology, expects as AI spreads to yet another corner of our lives. "Medicine is going toward precision medicine and precision health," Mehrotra said at the Techonomy 2018 conference in Half Moon Bay on the Pacific coastline south of San Francisco. "Imagine smart toilets in the future that will be analyzing human waste in real time every day. You don't need to be going to visit a physician every six months. If any sign of disease starts showing up, you'll be able to catch it much faster because of urine analysis and stool analysis."Medicine already is being changed by AI, technology that uses human-inspired technology called neural networks to spot various types of patterns. AI systems, once trained on … [Read more...] about AI toilets will scan your poop to diagnose your ailments
