We love a girl who keeps us guessing, and when it comes to red carpet looks, BlacKkKlansman star Laura Harrier always does. In fact, she rivals her Spider-Man: Homecoming co-star Zendaya in switching up her look regularly and sometimes, dramatically; especially as her profile (and promotional appearances) have escalated. With a sexy, heavy-lidded gaze, high cheekbones, a full pout and mile-long legs, the former model and Louis Vuitton brand ambassador has the type of look that would easily adapt to almost any era—an asset she and celebrity hairstylist Lacy Redway regularly use to her advantage. “Laura’s a chameleon. She can do no wrong!” Redway recently told Vogue, revealing that to honor Harrier’s turn as a young black revolutionary in BlacKkKlansman, they’ve drawn inspiration from a number of famous black beauties to keep Harrier’s looks fresh during the press tour. Redway—who also coifs Angela Bassett, Ruth Negga, Jourdan Dunn and Uzo … [Read more...] about She Got That Glow: Why We’re Low-Key Obsessed With Laura Harrier’s Ever-Changing Looks
Fans of a high school soccer team showed what true sportsmanship means to two black players from the opposing team...by calling them racial slurs and other names, of course. According to Good4Utah, the Canyons school district has launched an investigation after fans sitting in Alta High School’s student section apparently shouted racial slurs at the two black students, who represented Sky View High School soccer team. “I didn’t know what to do. I was so shocked. I was so confused,” Emmie Woodward, a senior at Sky View, recalled. Emmie and her sister, Darcy, developed a love for soccer, and are often the only black players on their soccer teams growing up in Smithfield The two sisters were both adopted by Mark and Kate Woodward, Emmie since she was 7, and Darcy as a baby. They’ve never had an issue before. “Skin color has never mattered. It’s never been anything that I’ve focused on,” Darcy said. The sisters have always had … [Read more...] about 2 Black Utah High School Soccer Players Subject to Racial Taunts, Slurs From Fans of Rival Team
A Chevy Venture is, let’s face it, a deeply, deeply boring car. But, speaking of facing things, consider this: maybe it’s a fantastic car, if only the front end were replaced with a gigantic, snarling face? Didn’t think of that, did you? Well, someone did, and then got their Snarlventure repo’d, which means this masterpiece can be yours. Hot damn. The current bid is only $100! You’d be a fool not to bid on this thing! Also, this may have the most inadequate “General Description” section of any ad I’ve ever seen: “General Description: Has custom built hood-shows wear, engine does not turn over” Uh, that’s a little more than a “custom built hood.” That’s a whole goddamn crazy face someone has laboriously sculpted for the front of the car. It reminds me a bit of the sort of faces Flavor Flav used to make. It’s sort of agressive, but also sort of unhinged, maybe even a little playful, in a drunken … [Read more...] about Someone Buy This, the Best Chevy Venture in the Known Universe
Up until this point, we’ve only driven the Tesla Model 3 in short bursts. And we’ve liked it very much. Now, it’s time to see what it’s like to live with for a longer-term test. We have a Model 3 Long Range for the weekend. What do you want to know about it? So far, I quite enjoy the car. It’s comfortable and its steering is very responsive. It’s quick when you need bursts of speed, which is handy in New York City traffic—which unfortunately did not let up for me in the slightest during my short drive from the Tesla store in Red Hook to the office. I’m not 100 percent sold on having my phone as the car’s primary key, so that’s going to take some getting used to. I’m also going to have to get used to the giant screen in the middle of the dash. It seems intuitive enough, though. The Model 3's base price is $35,000, but because this is the Long Range version, it has options the long range battery for $9,000, premium … [Read more...] about What Do You Want to Know About the 2018 Tesla Model 3?
If there’s one thing we know about the Queen of Soul, it’s that she loved a “lewk.” Aside from her often extravagant stage attire, Aretha Franklin was fond of a dramatic gesture—the tossing of a train, the shedding of a fur—because, as our loyal reader TheRealMarthaJones3.0 accurately noted, “Auntie understood DRAMA! EMOTION! and EFFECT!” Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration was no different; when Franklin took the dais to sing “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,” she did so wearing a gray felt pillbox hat with an oversized, bedazzled bow that nearly stole the show from Franklin herself. The hat, which has lived on in countless memes in the near decade since, was a custom creation by Luke Song of Mr. Song Millinery in Detroit, a hometown favorite of Franklin’s (their site’s homepage currently features a touching tribute to the star). The bow was adorned with Swarovski crystals, because only the best for the Queen. … [Read more...] about Will Aretha’s Most Iconic Hat Become a Part of Obama’s Legacy?
When Ruth Parker rolled up to a Taco Bell in Carbondale, Illinois on Tuesday—something she does every Tuesday and Friday—this was waiting for her: In case there’s any question, Taco Bell does not put HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUTH on their big sign for just anyone. And the sign wasn’t the last of it. The cameras of KFVS-12, a CBS affiliate local to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, captured flowers, balloons, and a table with a tablecloth, all awaiting her arrival. She’s a regular, and it was her birthday, so the staff of this Taco Bell did it up right. Parker told KFVS-12 that she celebrates every birthday at the Bell, adding, “I feel alright for being 101, I guess.” Her fondness for this particular Taco Bell began some time ago when, newly arrived in town, she started looking for a place to read the newspaper and drink a cup of coffee. Taco Bell does not serve coffee, but an employee made her a cup anyway. Eighteen years later, she still comes in twice a week. … [Read more...] about Everyone is wonderful in this story about a 101-year-old celebrating her birthday at Taco Bell
Life is full of annoyances, like when the valet’s face lights up upon seeing the key to your McLaren, or when the mansion groundskeeper has the audacity to remind you that holidays exist. And for the love of everything that is good in the world, let’s not even talk about when the help accidentally spills alcohol on your designer clothes while trying to pour you a glass in the back of the car. But, thankfully, after you’d fired too many people to count for that and just when you were about to give up all hope, BMW patented a bottoms-up-style drink filler to keep this nightmare from happening. AutoGuide found the patent, and said the system works like a bottoms-up beer filler. A person sets a glass on the filler, the filler pops the bottom of the glass up, and fills it with a predetermined amount of drink from the bottom up rather than from the top down—avoiding spillage. The story also said the system has two drink reservoirs, because life is all about choices, … [Read more...] about BMW Patents Bottoms-Up Drink Filler So You Can Drink Even When the Chauffeur Picks Lousy Roads
Barf Bag Welcome to Barf Bag, a daily politics roundup to help you sort through the chaotic Trumpian news cycle. Ugh, it’s the weekend again! Good time to respond to that text you’ve been meaning to. You going out tonight? Here’s all the shit we couldn’t cover today: Omarosa publisher and Trump lawyer: Still fighting. Were you hoping to read another book? I’m sorry, there is only one book. [Chicago Tribune] Speaking of Don Jr., taxpayers footed the bill for Trump Jr.’s trip to India, with stops in Mumbia and Pune, earlier this year—specifically, for the cost of hotel rooms for his security detail. The total cost? More than $32,000. [Washington Post] The latest way to voice your disapproval of the Trump administration? Uh, according to the former military commander who was instrumental to the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, it’s asking the president to revoke your security clearance. Sure, I guess? [Politico] Super cool: Three … [Read more...] about There Is Only One Book Now
