This past week, I replaced rotted-out brake lines under my landlord’s $1 Oldsmobile, and let me just say: It was total hell. I wrenched in my wet, dark driveway as my neighbor anxiously waited for his only mode of transportation to be fixed, and all the while, my hands bled from the sharp rust and my eyes watered from little rust particles falling into them. I think I need to leave Michigan. Knock Knock, I heard at my door on Monday as I sat at my computer, browsing Craigslist—I mean, writing blogs about cars. After emailing the seller—oops! Saving my draft, I meant to say, I walked to the door to find my landlord standing there. “Hey David, is the car ready?” he asked. “I’ve been sitting at home because I don’t have a way to get around.” Ef. The car, a deathtrap whose brakes had gone out on the poor guy just a few days prior, was not ready. I had spent Saturday night yanking the rusty brake lines out of the car, a job that … [Read more...] about Replacing Rusty Brake Lines on a $1 Oldsmobile Alero Was Hell

It’s no secret that the Tesla Model S shares a lot of components with other cars, especially when it comes to modules that control various features inside of the cabin. Using parts from cars like the Ford Fusion and the Mercedes E-Class made sense for Tesla’s first outing as a small but growing manufacturer. Yet one of the questions with the Model 3 was whether Tesla would follow the same pattern or use more in-house components. Now we know more, thanks to a recent set of teardown videos gives us a lot of insight on how the car is put together. The Ingineerix channel on YouTube has started posted videos showing some details of the Model 3 a few months ago and has recently expanded to showing a teardown a salvage car that they acquired. My knuckles are cut up. My back is sore. My fingernails are scrubbed. It’s been a while since I’ve wrenched on my car, and now I don’t want to stop. The garage where I parked my 1974 Volkswagen Beetle closed at the end of July, leaving me scrambling to find a spot for it that wasn’t on the street. VWs are so, so, so easy to hotwire and I was really looking for anywhere. What I ended up with was a total blessing. My buddy Bill Petrow rented me out a space in his shop Broken Motorsports across the Hudson in Union City, New Jersey. (If you’ve followed my various automotive adventures over the years, I met Bill when I first started going to see the tarmac Empire State Performance rally, then when I started going seeing drifting at Club Loose, then we started doing rallies together all the way up until we made it up the Mount Washington Hill Climb even after flipping off the mountain.) It’s a joy having a place to put my car at all, but the nice thing … [Read more...] about I Finally Have Access To a Shop! What Should I Fix On My Terrible Volkswagen?
Modifying your car is the most surefire way to make it yours. It sets the car apart from all the other lame-o cars on the road and you get to express yourself a little bit. We all have our favorite mods. Last week, I asked you guys what single car mod has helped you out the most. You know which one I’m talking about: The one where, after you applied it, you couldn’t imagine life without it. My car is completely stock. This could be me just gathering intel for later. Or maybe not. Who knows! Tires & Driver (Stang70Fastback) Right off the bat, nearly all of you unanimously agreed that tires and driving school are some of the most important things. Personally, I don’t consider tires consumables because they affect the way a car performs so heavily. And learning to drive, even if it’s on a track, makes you a better driver overall. Exhaust (SLO-Flat4) Cars make good noises. I would like to hear those noises. Hood Struts (1LoudST) All hail multi-tasking! RWD … [Read more...] about These Are the Best Ways to Modify a Car
