Facebook bans accounts linked to anti-government US ‘boogaloo’ movement

Facebook Inc stepped up the battle against the amorphous anti-government " boogaloo " movement , banning accounts of adherents who encouraged violence during recent anti-racism protests across the United States. The social media company for the first time designated a subset of boogaloo followers as a dangerous organization, marking them for the same sanctions Facebook applies to 250 white supremacist groups and organizations it categorizes as supporting terrorism around the world. The move came four days after Attorney General William Barr established a Justice Department task force to counter violent anti-government extremists including boogaloo as well as the left-wing antifa movement. The boogaloo movement's name is inspired by the 1984 breakdancing film "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo." Followers suggest that, just as the movie was a sequel, any coming conflict would be the sequel to the American Civil War. "This violent network is banned from having a presence on our … [Read more...] about Facebook bans accounts linked to anti-government US ‘boogaloo’ movement

Endangered Species Act at 40: Rivals Find Common Ground

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Two long-time political rivals lowered their defenses recently and spoke of reaching an accord on the Endangered Species Act, the law that led to their fiercest battle four decades ago. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the act, co-signed in 1973 by Rep. Pete McCloskey (R-Calif.). McCloskey, always an environmentalist, left office in 1982 but returned to campaigning to unseat seven-term incumbent Richard Pombo in 2006. Pombo (R-Calif.) had earned an anti-environmental reputation for his attempts to reform the Endangered Species Act , and McCloskey sent enough votes to Pombo's Democratic rival to decide the election against Pombo. Neither has been elected to office since 2006. Pombo and McCloskey now live on ranches about 100 miles (160 kilometers) apart in Northern California. At a panel discussion on the Endangered Species Act and its future, held Jan. 31 at the Western Section of The Wildlife Society's annual meeting in Sacramento, the two men … [Read more...] about Endangered Species Act at 40: Rivals Find Common Ground

Attorney-General asked to update ‘personal information’ definition in Privacy Act

The Attorney-General's Department is currently in the midst of reviewing the Australia Privacy Act 1988. Since October, it has been calling for all interested parties to provide their two cents. A reoccurring theme from many of the submissions has been to align the Act with international laws, such as Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Facebook, for example, has suggested making such a change would prevent the creation of a "splinternet". Adopting many elements of the GDPR would also provide for a more up-to-date definition of "personal information", according to many. The Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre (CSCRC), which is based out of Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, in its submission, called for the definition of personal information to be amended to align with the GPDR. As did Facebook.AusPayNet submitted [PDF] that the definition of what constitutes personal data as seen in other data protection regulation … [Read more...] about Attorney-General asked to update ‘personal information’ definition in Privacy Act
