Shares of Reddit-darling GameStop climbed, rising more than 20% at one point in yet another unexplained move that left market watchers looking for a possible catalyst. GameStop shares closed up 6.4% at $131.93 after earlier hitting $147.87, their highest since a surge in the heavily shorted stock late last month. One analyst and some Twitter users pointed to a cryptic tweet by Ryan Cohen, a major shareholder of GameStop and founder of e-commerce firm Chewy.com, as a plausible reason for the move, although Reuters could not independently determine causation. The late afternoon rally in GameStop began roughly around the time that Cohen tweeted what appeared to be a screenshot with the puppet dog advertising mascot of Pets.com, a famous casualty of the dotcom bubble two decades ago. Cohen and GameStop had no comment on the tweet. The tweet was "as good an explanation as any" for the sudden surge in GameStop shares, said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter in an … [Read more...] about GameStop spikes as investors eye cryptic tweet by shareholder

Samsung OLED TV with quantum dots could challenge LG as soon as next year
Right now there are two TV technologies available to most people: LCD and OLED . Sure, people with tons of money might get a MicroLED TV , but mere mortals have only those two choices. The biggest TV maker in the world, Samsung, has been firmly in the LCD camp for many years, while crosstown rival LG is the biggest name in OLED . LCD, despite advancements like QLED , mini-LED and dual panels , has always lagged behind OLED in overall picture quality. Now Samsung is working on a new kind of TV that aims to combine two display technologies into something greater than the sum of its parts. It's a hybrid between OLED and quantum dots called QD Display. According to Korea IT News , Samsung Display will end production of LCD panels by the end of 2021, moving to QD Display next year. At the same time, Samsung Electronics could start selling these new TVs as early as 2022. Razer enters audio glasses arena with Anzu eyewear
Audio glasses are quickly becoming a thing. Last year Bose followed its original Frames with three second-generation models, including the sporty Tempo Fames , and Amazon is selling the second-generation of its Echo Frames while plenty of others, like Razer, are now jumping in on the "smart" glasses action. The Razer Anzer , which comes in round and square versions in two different size options, is available now for $200 (£200, AU$320). I haven't tried them yet but their design (at least the square version) and specs don't appear to be so different from other models I've tried. The small size weighs 43 grams while the large weighs 48 grams (the Echo Frames are 31 grams by comparison). The glasses include 35% blue light filtering lenses along with a set of polarized sunglasses lenses (you can easily swap them in), have touch controls and integrated 16mm speaker drivers that fire directional sound toward your open ears. Brazil adopts real-time analytics to present Covid-19 data
The Brazilian government has launched a new portal powered by real-time data analytics to report the evolving picture on the Covid-19 outbreak, following controversy over moves to suppress the release of such information in what is the current global epicenter of the pandemic. Earlier this week, data relating to the pandemic had, without warning, been removed from the health ministry website and the government announced it would stop releasing historical numbers on cumulative deaths and the number of infections. The decision sparked outrage as it was seen as an attempt to cover up the worsening health crisis in the country. The Brazilian Supreme Court then ordered the federal administration to resume publishing complete statistics on the pandemic on Tuesday. However, the government's earlier decision to stop publishing key information on the outbreak prompted media organizations and universities to find alternative ways to collect data from the public health authorities in order to … [Read more...] about Brazil adopts real-time analytics to present Covid-19 data
Scientists still stuck on Betelgeuse antics a year after strange dimming episode
A year ago, the bright red star Betelgeuse in the Orion constellation hit the headlines when stargazers noticed a stark fading episode that astronomers couldn't explain. They still can't, although they keep trying. The suspense is particularly high now, since the star, which typically dims and brightens on a regular schedule, should soon start to fade again, for the first time since last year's strange antics. Scientists hope that this year's observations of Betelgeuse will put last year's episode in context, which could shape astronomers' understanding of stellar activities more generally. One such astronomer shared an update at the 237th meeting of the American Astronomical Society , held virtually in January, in advance of the dimming predicted to occur this April. "We want to see whether last year was really unique," Andrea Dupree, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told Space.com after the conference. "What if it happens again? … [Read more...] about Scientists still stuck on Betelgeuse antics a year after strange dimming episode
