GAO report finds DOD’s weapons programs lack clear cybersecurity guidelines
In a new report released Thursday, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) said the Department of Defense fails to communicate clear cybersecurity guidelines to contractors tasked with building systems for its weapons programs. For instance, three out of five contracts reviewed by the GAO had no cybersecurity requirements written into the contract language when they were awarded, with only vague requirements added later. And out of the four military service branches, only the Air Force has a record of issuing … [Read more...] about GAO report finds DOD’s weapons programs lack clear cybersecurity guidelines
A pro photographer tests Apple’s M1 MacBook
As a professional photographer, I was intrigued when Apple ditched Intel's chips and instead started using its own M1 silicon in the MacBook lineup . The performance boosts Apple promised were appealing -- as was the supposed battery life improvement -- but I was nervous about having to run my professional software on a platform that wasn't yet properly supported by some of the tools I use every day. I've spent some time now with the 13-inch M1-based MacBook Pro (with 16GB RAM) and have run it through a variety of tests to see how well I can work on it. Is it a safe upgrade for photographers or other creative professionals? Or should you wait for promised software updates? Stay in the know Get the latest tech stories with CNET Daily News every weekday. Apple using its own chips might seem like a small change that you'll never need to think about, but it has a big impact on how software will run. To get the best performance, the programs you use will need to be … [Read more...] about A pro photographer tests Apple’s M1 MacBook
Apps, drone deliveries and AI: How technology stepped up its game to fight COVID-19
For the past few months, an independent board of technology experts has been closely tracking the new ways that AI and data have been used to counter and mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK; and now, they are lifting the veil on the good, the bad and the ugly of the past year in digital tech. The Center for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) has released a new report diving deep into the 118 individual use-cases for AI and data-driven technologies that have been added to the organization's COVID-19 repository since last November. Spanning vastly different sectors and locations, the examples collated in the document provide a unique vision of the ways that technology can help in a time of crisis. From piloting drones to delivering medical supplies, to monitoring the behavior of residents in public transport during the easing of lockdown restrictions: if there is one observation that all experts will agree on, it is certainly that technology has been a central … [Read more...] about Apps, drone deliveries and AI: How technology stepped up its game to fight COVID-19
Pacific Rim: Uprising is only interested in the giant-robot fights
The downside of sequels is that they so rarely have anything new to offer. Unless they’re part of a planned, ongoing storyline, like the Star Wars or Harry Potter movies, sequels are usually about mechanically reproducing the most popular parts of the original film, and making them bigger, louder, and faster. But the “faster” part can be one of the upsides of sequels. Once a franchise-launching film gets all the roadblocks of world-building, exposition, and character development out of the way, sequels have a clear road to the action, and they can rev the motor and speed along without impediment. That certainly holds true for Pacific Rim: Uprising , the slick, upbeat sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s giant-monster movie Pacific Rim . The 2013 film had a lot of heavy lifting to do, as it established a version of Earth beset by immense, other-dimensional monsters called kaiju, and explained humanity’s effort to fight them off with equally titanic mecha-suits called jaegers. Del … [Read more...] about Pacific Rim: Uprising is only interested in the giant-robot fights
