We’ve been told many times how important backups are, although we may not realize it until it’s too late and our data’s gone. You can backup your PC’s data to external media, but free online backup services provide useful redundancy that could save your data. We’ve discussed cloud computing previously, or running a web or internet-based application from a major provider like Google or Microsoft, but the “cloud” could also be used to provide an offsite location for your data backups. You should have local backups running, backing up different kinds of data, such as your personal data on your PC, profile data from your web browsers, Wi-Fi passwords and network profiles, drivers installed on your system, and even game data and game systems. Backing up to the cloud, as well, provides another level of safety for your data. We’ve listed some cloud-based online backup websites here that allow you to backup your data online. Each of these … [Read more...] about The Best Websites for Backing Up and Sharing Your Data in the Cloud for Free

European dating giant Badoo has added a live video chat feature to its apps, giving users the chance to talk face-to-face with matches from the comfort of their own home — and even before agreeing to go out on a first date. It’s claiming it’s the first dating app service to add a live video feature, though clearly major players in the space were not holding back because of the complexity of the technical challenge involved. Rather live video in a dating app context raises some immediate risk flags, including around inappropriate behavior which could put off users. And for examples on that front you only need recall the kind of content that veteran Internet service Chatroulette was famed for serving straight up — if you were brave enough to play. (“I pressed ‘play’ last night at around 3:00 am PST and after about 45 clicks on ‘Next’ encountered 5 straight up penis shots,” began TechCrunch’s former co-editor … [Read more...] about Badoo adds Live Video chat to its dating apps
One of the best complements that can be paid to an online dating platform is no longer requiring its services (because that likely means you’ve found a mate). Indeed, if you find yourself in such a situation, the logical step is to shut down your account and move on with life but as some former Match.com users are finding out, the Internet is a very permanent place. According to a report from The Verge, Match Group – the parent company of Match.com and several other dating services including Tinder, OKCupid and PlentyOfFish – recently reactivated a “limited number” of old accounts by mistake. Suddenly, some users were receiving e-mail notifications for a dating service they hadn’t used in years… and in some cases, decades. Aside from the obvious turmoil that could be caused by old – and purportedly deleted – accounts resurfacing (imagine having to explain those e-mails to your significant other or even friends and family that happen … [Read more...] about Match.com glitch reactivated some old user profiles, creating headaches and confusion
On a recent Sunday, creative director Jason Debiak was having breakfast with his family in New Jersey, when something strange happened. “I was having an adorable breakfast with my family, my 2-year-old daughter and my wife,” he says. “Something came up [on my phone] and I usually try not to check my email, but I checked my email and it said, ‘You have 10 new matches on Match.com.’ I was like... what?” Debiak’s long-forgotten — and, he assumed, long-deleted — dating profile from over a decade ago had suddenly been reactivated. “I log in, and there I am, from 15 years prior, with less gray hair,” he said. “And my whole profile is there, everything.” Judging by the messages he received, Debiak says it seemed like the account had been reopened for about a week. “I contacted customer service, and they said, ‘Oh, we’re sorry you got email notifications. We’ll turn off email … [Read more...] about A Match.com glitch reactivated a bunch of old profiles and their owners are horrified
In the past year, I’ve done a considerable amount of dating and I’m honestly exhausted. Dates are not only frequently disappointing, they’re also expensive—I always insist on paying for myself. Well, after being introduced to the world of Sugaring, I may never do that again. On Friday, I attended the Sugar Baby Summit, a conference organized by Seeking Arrangements, a website where Sugar Daddies connect with their Sugar Babies for mutually beneficial arrangements. Sugaring is mostly for rich men (and a small, small handful of wealthy women) who want companionship and are willing to pay for it. But becoming a popular Baby means networking, just like everything else these days, and the Summit was supposed to help with that. My expectations for the event were low. Men are often creeps, and they’re often creeps everywhere, but it seems especially creepy to want to be called Daddy. The summit was on an upper floor of a glass building at Columbus Circle with a … [Read more...] about Why Have I Been Dating for Free When I Could’ve Had a Sugar Daddy?

ByValeriya Safronova April 11, 2018 Different studies offer varying assessments of how many people use dating sites and apps, but what we can say with certainty is: a lot. In Match.com’s annual Singles in America Survey, which polls more than 5,000 people who are not Match users, the company found that the No. 1 place where singles meet is online. In 2016, Pew reported that 27 percent of people aged 18 to 24 had used a dating app or site. In 2013, it was 10 percent. The proportion of 55- to 64-year-olds in the same category doubled. “An average person spends about three hours a day on their mobile phone,” said Lexi Sydow, a market insights manager at … [Read more...] about An Inside Look at Your Favorite Dating Sites
Some people have problems that require delicate advice from a qualified professional. Others just need a random a guy on the internet to kick ‘em in the teeth (with honesty, that is). I’m the latter. Welcome back to Tough Love. This week we I’m responding to a few advice seekers and tackling a question I get regularly: “How do I get people to respond to my online dating messages?” Note: I’m not a therapist or health professional of any kind. People ask for my advice and I give it to them. End of transaction. If you have a problem with it, feel free to file a formal complaint here. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get on with it. I’m serious about finding someone, but when I connect with someone online, it seems they chat then stop. Or they say they live too far. Or just don’t respond at all. Here’s another poor soul: Hey, so I match with guys often but it never goes anywhere. I have tried waiting for them to … [Read more...] about Dating Apps Are for Scheduling Dates, People

Welcome back to Tough Love. This week we have a woman who’s worried she’s not being honest enough with her online dating profile photos. Note: I’m not a therapist or health professional of any kind. Hi Patrick, I have an online dating question for you. To be blunt, I am a very curvy chick that happens to be extremely photogenic. I tend to receive messages from dudes that seem great, but I can’t believe they would actually be interested in me if we met in person. Generally, I ignore these messages… although it sucks because I do think a lot of … [Read more...] about The Rules of Online Dating Profile Photos
