Haptic feedback on Android phones running the Snapdragon 888 chipset might get noticeably better starting in the second half of 2021. Qualcomm recently announced (via 9to5Google ) that it’s working independently with a company called Lofelt to enhance haptics through software , not hardware. That initially read as a puzzling decision, since hardware — not software — seems to play the bigger role in the quality of the vibration. But this actually sounds very clever, definitely more clever than Lofelt’s Basslet vibrating wearable that it launched on Kickstarter in 2016. Outside of some high-end LG phones, most Android phones deliver muddy or rattling vibrations that don’t feel that great. Even the best ones can’t compete with Apple’s Taptic Engine it builds in-house and builds into iPhones and Apple Watch wearables. Tactile, punchy vibration probably isn’t high up on the list of many people in terms of must-have features, but it can go a surprisingly long way in making you … [Read more...] about Qualcomm’s new partnership aims to improve haptic feedback on Android devices

D-Wave releases its next-generation quantum annealing chip
Today, quantum computing company D-Wave is announcing the availability of its next-generation quantum annealer, a specialized processor that uses quantum effects to solve optimization and minimization problems. The hardware itself isn't much of a surprise—D-Wave was discussing its details months ago —but D-Wave talked with Ars about the challenges of building a chip with over a million individual quantum devices. And the company is coupling the hardware's release to the availability of a new software stack that functions a bit like middleware between the quantum hardware and classical computers. Further Reading D-Wave announces the next generation of its quantum annealer Quantum annealing Quantum computers being built by companies like Google and IBM are general-purpose, gate-based machines. They can solve any problem and should show a vast acceleration for specific classes of problems—or they will, as soon as the gate count gets high enough. Right now, these quantum … [Read more...] about D-Wave releases its next-generation quantum annealing chip
Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) review: Move over Nest Hub Max

Jeramy Johnson 24 Feb 2021 0 Source: Jeramy Johnson / Android Central The smart speaker market has grown quite a bit since Amazon introduced the first Echo in late 2014. However, after introducing the first Echo Show in 2017, the evolution of smart screened devices hasn't progressed nearly so quickly. There have mostly been incremental updates to the devices put out by Amazon, Google, and others like Lenovo, adding bigger screens and (marginally) better speakers, but nothing has really moved the category forward. As it has done several times before, Amazon is poised to usher in the next paradigm shift in smart speaker tech with its latest Echo device, the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen). I've had the pleasure of using just about every Alexa and Google Assistant-enabled smart speaker over the past few years, so I feel … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) review: Move over Nest Hub Max

Android users now have an easy way to check the security of their passwords
Google is adding its password checkup feature to Android, making the mobile OS the latest company offering to give users an easy way to check if the passcodes they’re using have been compromised. Password Checkup works by checking credentials entered into apps against a list of billions of credentials compromised in the innumerable website breaches that have occurred in recent years. In the event there’s a match, users receive an alert, along with a prompt that can take them to Google’s password manager page , which offers a way to review the security of all saved credentials. Alerts look like this: Further Reading Google adds password “checkup” into Web account password manager Google introduced Password Checkup in early 2019 , in the form of a Chrome extension. In October of that year, the feature made its way into the Google Password Manager , a dashboard that examines Web passwords saved within Chrome that are synchronized using a Google account.
