The Intel subsidiary does not believe they need to use the “brute force” strategy of AI video-training that Tesla implements, but rather the “semantics of the road” can be discerned through more targeted means. Their current systems record video data, which it processes locally to understand the geometry of its environment, then sends those small packets of information back to Mobileye to help construct massive 3D maps. These maps provide detailed geometrical data as well as contextual, behavioral data in local regions of the city or street they were taken. … [Read more...] about Intel’s self-driving tech division Mobileye is picking up speed, set to become a true threat to Tesla

Best air purifiers for 2021: Coway, Honeywell, Blueair and more
David Priest/CNET After months of use in my own home, Coway's HEPA air purifier has cemented itself as my favorite HEPA air cleaner around. While it saw great deals in recent months, its price tag at Amazon is up to an uncomfortable $250 -- which is only decent for the 361-square-foot coverage it offers. Luckily, its unique design and ion filtration technology set it apart from many other purifiers in the price range. The Coway's striking, retro design was one of my favorites among the devices I tested. … [Read more...] about Best air purifiers for 2021: Coway, Honeywell, Blueair and more
CES showed off the COVID-19 mask gimmick arms race
But a gimmick arms race won’t necessarily make masks work better. We need better masks for everyone, not just stylish products for people who can afford them. In the United States, nearly a year into the pandemic, most people are still wearing cloth masks, which are better than nothing, but not the best way to block the virus. Cloth masks were supposed to be a stop-gap until officials could scale up production of medical-grade masks, but those never materialized. Meanwhile, Taiwan is distributing high-quality masks to citizens, and Germany is requiring N95-equivalent masks in stores. … [Read more...] about CES showed off the COVID-19 mask gimmick arms race
“Not just a virus that kills people”—WHO spotlights longterm COVID-19
Tedros next welcomed Martha Sibanda, a nurse in Johannesburg, South Africa, who was infected in June. Her symptoms started with shortness of breath, cough, and fatigue, and things quickly escalated to the point that she needed oxygen. She was hospitalized at first but then moved to intensive care, where she spent eight days. Though she was able to move back to the hospital ward after that, she still had trouble weaning off oxygen. She stayed in the hospital for 26 more days, all on oxygen. Now, in her fourth month, she still struggles to breath and has not been able to return to work. Her aim is to be back to work by then end of the month, a full five months since falling ill. … [Read more...] about “Not just a virus that kills people”—WHO spotlights longterm COVID-19
Best 3D printers for 2021
Dan Ackerman/CNET The ambitious da Vinci Jr. 1.0 A Pro is a step-up printer with a big 6.9-inch square build surface and optional add-ons for both laser engraving and using specialized material like carbon-fiber filament. It's currently $450 on Amazon. That said, the lack of built-in Wi-Fi is a major hassle, and for this price a nonheated print bed is a serious omission. Some of the company's printers are locked to proprietary filament, but fortunately, this model is not (which is good, because the sample roll of PLA filament included in the box wasn't great). … [Read more...] about Best 3D printers for 2021
