Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an open-world RPG coming to the Switch

At a special live-streamed event today, The Pokémon Company revealed something fans having been waiting a long time for: an open-world Pokémon adventure. The next major entry in the franchise will be called Pokémon Legends: Arceus , and it looks to be a huge evolution of the long-running RPG formula. The developers describe it as a “pre-make,” which offers “a new challenge and a new frontier for the Pokémon world.” The story takes place in the Sinnoh region, at a period that appears to be long before other Pokémon games, and will include a number of iconic monsters like Piplup, with your choice of starters including Rowlet, Oshawott, and Cyndaquil. It’s expected to launch worldwide on the Switch in early 2022. Here’s the basic premise: As trainers explore the natural expanses in Pokémon Legends: Arceus , they’ll encounter pokémon that call these grand vistas home. To catch wild pokémon, players can study the pokémon’s behaviors, sneak up to them, then throw poké balls. … [Read more...] about Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an open-world RPG coming to the Switch

Microsoft: We’ve open-sourced this tool we used to hunt for code by SolarWinds hackers

Microsoft is open-sourcing the CodeQL queries that it used to investigate the impact of Sunburst or Solarigate malware planted in the SolarWinds Orion software updates. Other organizations can use the queries to perform a similar analysis. Microsoft released the queries as part of its response to the attack on SolarWinds Orion network monitoring software, which was used to selectively compromise nine US federal agencies and 100 private sector firms , many of which were from the tech sector. Facebook says goodbye to Oculus Go, opens up Oculus Quest to new apps

If you've been shopping for Oculus Quest , Facebook's popular (and great) VR headset, you may be confused that there's also a less-expensive (and not as good) Oculus Go model that's still available, too. Not for long: Facebook announced it's discontinuing the Go this year, just two years after its 2018 release, and will focus only on the Quest as its one standalone VR device. Facebook has also announced that the tightly curated Oculus Quest is going to open up to new apps and software in 2021, including experimental projects that will be easier to load from outside the Oculus app store. Oculus Quest (starts at $399) In a post published today, Facebook said it will "end sales of Oculus Go headsets this year as we double down on improving our offerings for Quest and Rift." The Go -- basically a smartphone-style VR headset in a single sealed package -- will stop getting new feature updates, and new apps and app updates will stop appearing in the Oculus Go store … [Read more...] about Facebook says goodbye to Oculus Go, opens up Oculus Quest to new apps

iFixit opens up the Playstation 4—replaceable hard drive earns big props

In addition to tearing apart an Xbox One , the iFixit folks also recently pried apart Sony's latest console, the PlayStation 4 . One of the immediately noticeable differences between the two consoles is the accessibility of the primary storage. The Xbox One requires a considerable amount of disassembly to pull out and replace the hard disk drive, and iFixit calls it a warranty-voiding procedure. Sony, on the other hand, makes pulling out the 2.5-inch 5400 rpm SATA II drive relatively simple—it requires only a single Philips-head screwdriver. However, aside from the user-replaceable HDD, getting into the system's guts is a little harder than with the Xbox One. The One uses standard T9 Torx screws, while the PS4 uses Torx Security screws, which won't seat a screwdriver with a regular Torx bit. Once inside the cover, the iFixit crew first removed the system's large internal power supply. Many people consider this design decision to be a serious point in Sony's favor since it means … [Read more...] about iFixit opens up the Playstation 4—replaceable hard drive earns big props

’ stealth-infused open world hits Switch in 2022

Today's online Pokémon Presents stream , which celebrated the series' 25th anniversary, included at least one major surprise: the announcement of a new, more action-oriented Pokémon game set in a period resembling feudal Japan. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is in full development by Game Freak and is targeting an early 2022 release, according to the announcement. While the new game will be set in the now-familiar Sinnoh region, it will move things back to "a long, long time ago, when the Sinnoh region was still only a vast wilderness." Players will operate from a base in a feudal-style village, starting out with one of three familiar starter pokémon (Rowlett, Cyndaquil, or Oshawott) to explore that wilderness and fill in the region's first pokédex.
