FCC waives rules to boost broadband for hospitals, schools amid coronavirus crisis

For the most up-to-date news and information about the coronavirus pandemic, visit the WHO website . The Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday temporarily waived rules in its Rural Health Care and E-Rate programs to help promote better access to broadband for telehealth and distance learning during the coronavirus pandemic. The agency announced that it has waived "gift rules" in these programs until Sept. 20, 2020. These rules prohibit hospitals in the Rural Health Care program or schools and libraries participating in the E-Rate program, which get subsidies, to accept or seek anything of value from a service provider participating in the program. These rules are meant to prevent fraud and abuse in the program. With the rules waived, service providers will be able to donate equipment like Wi-Fi hotspots or will be allowed to offer free service upgrades to hospitals, schools and libraries getting these subsidies. This could allow broadband service providers to … [Read more...] about FCC waives rules to boost broadband for hospitals, schools amid coronavirus crisis

How Nextdoor saved my family during the Texas deep freeze

I was delighted last Monday to wake up to a beautiful 6 inches of snow blanketing my world. After all these years, my two teenagers would finally experience a day of real winter in Austin, Texas. I imagined the fun ahead of us. Then I turned on my phone. My ex-husband, David, had texted at 2:30 a.m. to tell me that his power was out as part of planned rolling outages. I texted back, asking when his power had returned. His response: It was still out. This was just before 9 a.m., and the temperature was in the low teens. I started to worry. David lives on one side of a duplex. My 18-year-old daughter, Shoshana, lives on the other side with two housemates, a bearded dragon and a kitten. Two friends had also spent the night. The rolling outages had failed . They were supposed to last less than an hour to help keep the Texas power grid up and running. But once an outage kicked in, it lasted for days. Austin wasn't alone. A massive snowstorm and record-breaking cold hit Texas … [Read more...] about How Nextdoor saved my family during the Texas deep freeze

Hundreds of skeletons fill this remote Himalayan lake. How did they get there?

High in the Himalayas, a four-to-five-day trek from the nearest village, sits an unassuming glacial lake called Roopkund. The spot is beautiful, a dollop of jewel-toned water amid rough gravel and scree, but hardly out of the ordinary for the rugged landscape — except for the hundreds of human bones scattered within and around the lake. These bones, belonging to between 300 and 800 people, have been a mystery since a forest ranger first reported them to the broader world in 1942. Lately, though, the mystery has only deepened. In 2019, a new genetic analysis of the ancient DNA in the bones, detailed in the journal Nature Communications , found that at least 14 of the people who died at the lake probably weren't from South Asia. Instead, their genes match those of modern-day people of the eastern Mediterranean. Related: 11 famous places that are littered with dead bodies What's more, these bones were far newer than most of the others at the lake, which date to … [Read more...] about Hundreds of skeletons fill this remote Himalayan lake. Diablo 4’s open world is as Diablo as it gets

BlizzCon 2021 has come and gone, with the eerily online-only event leaving us with a splattering of new Diablo details. There’s the long-overdue announcement of a Diablo 2 Remaster and the reveal of the Rogue class for Diablo 4 , as well as insight on the new PvP mode (maybe you’re even open to the new details surrounding mobile game Diablo Immortal , now that enough Diablo-related good news sits between us and its disastrous debut in 2018). Diablo 4’s Rogue class unveiled with its very own trailer during BlizzCon 2021 Diablo Immortal will be a mobile MMO, developers reveal at BlizzCon 2021 Hearthstone forges new expansion and takes cues from World of Warcraft with a ‘Classic’ mode But during my interview with Diablo 4 art director John Mueller and lead designer Joe Shelly at BlizzCon 2021, I wanted to find out more about the game’s oft-repeated claims to being an open-world game. We know from everything we’ve seen that in the nitty-gritty of combat, … [Read more...] about Diablo 4’s open world is as Diablo as it gets
