After a year of covering this, grappling with the pain this tiny virus is causing hasn’t gotten any easier. Every obituary to a life lost is still a heartbreak. I still tear up when I see the joy of a nurse getting vaccinated. I still ache for the living whose lives have been upended by crisis for a year or more. Overall, I’m still going, and so are all of you. We’re still not there yet, but we can hope that the road ahead of us is shorter and smoother than the one we’ve just come down. … [Read more...] about A year into coronavirus, we’re still counting the dead

Memristor that forgets makes a good model neuron
Recently, however, there have been a variety of attempts to build hardware that acts more like a collection of neurons than anything that Apple or Intel have designed. While some of that uses traditional silicon-based transistors, other efforts have explored a relatively newer development, the memristor. Now, an international collaboration that includes everyone from Hewlett Packard Enterprise to the Air Force has designed a memristor that behaves a bit more like a neuron: its recent activity influences how it responds. This is accomplished by allowing metal to diffuse within the solid memristor. … [Read more...] about Memristor that forgets makes a good model neuron
GamerGate troll turns tail after receiving harassment of his own
He claimed that the harassment began after he posted his weirdest GamerGate-related video to date, in which Rankowski kicked and shouted—complete with racist epithets—at a Prius that had flipped over on a road. The video concluded with a text-loaded slideshow that alleged that game maker Brianna Wu, a frequent target of recent anonymous harassment, was somehow responsible for the car flipping over—and that she had done so to prevent Rankowski from driving to her house "to expose her as a corrupt gamer." The video went on to announce the beginning of an effort known as "Wu-pocalypse" to "discredit the [social justice warrior] people online." … [Read more...] about GamerGate troll turns tail after receiving harassment of his own
Peptide depots and DNA tattoos could deliver drugs in the future
They were able to form this polymer as a layer on top of a grid of many tiny microneedles. Each one is much smaller than the needles normally used for injection, but still capable of penetrating the outer layers of the skin and depositing the polymer beneath it, in much the same way that a tattooing needle deposits ink underneath the skin. Once injected, the polymer slowly degraded, gradually releasing DNA that was taken up by nearby cells. … [Read more...] about Peptide depots and DNA tattoos could deliver drugs in the future
