Earlier this year the BBC announced that it planned to give one million students across the UK a programmable microcomputer, called the BBC Micro Bit, to help them learn the basics of coding. Now four months later, the design of the device has been finalized , ahead of its scheduled rollout date in October. The Micro Bit features two buttons, an array of programmable LED lights, and an in-built motion sensor. Users can connect their microcomputer to bigger devices by Bluetooth or USB, or to the similarly tiny Raspberry Pi through it's input-output rings. The tiny Micro Bit can connect via USB or Bluetooth The final design has one major change from the prototype shown in March — instead of a slimline watch battery, the device is now powered by two AA batteries. "The initial prototype utilised a smaller battery," a BBC spokesperson explained. "However in reviewing the design and examining the health and safety implications of using small batteries for a young audience, where … [Read more...] about This is the tiny computer the BBC is giving to a million kids

Apple has promised to open up its Find My app to third-party accessory makers . But ahead of that, there’s a new tool that will let anybody make their own Bluetooth tracking tag to use with the Find My network so they can track its location. OpenHaystack is a new open-source tool developed by security researchers at the Secure Mobile Networking Lab , who have essentially reverse-engineered the way Apple devices register themselves to the Find My mesh network. It is, in short, a way to create your own DIY AirTags today. OpenHaystack works via a custom Mac app that can be used to track the location of custom tags that you create. As of right now, the tool has direct support to make a tracking tag using the BBC micro:bit mini computer , though other Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device support could be added by other developers in the future. Once registered on Apple’s Find My network, the OpenHaystack app will be able to report the tag’s location just like Apple’s Find My app … [Read more...] about OpenHaystack is a new open-source tool that lets you create DIY AirTags on Apple’s Find My network
Zigbee goes to Mars: What is smart home tech doing on NASA’s latest mission? Watch Now Have you been following the Perseverance rover that landed on Mars in February? It was fun to watch as the robot landed on the surface of Mars, ready to explore. And it's been even more mesmerizing to watch as videos -- with sound -- and pictures have made their way back to Earth. Part of the technology that makes the communication between the rover and NASA possible is Zigbee. My ZDNet Jason Squared co-host, Jason Cipriani, and I recently had the opportunity to interview Tobin Richardson, the CEO, and president of the Zigbee Alliance, about this project, as well as the future of the Zigbee wireless standard. Space Quantum sensors could soon be heading into space SpaceX launches off more Starlink satellites as part of its first ride-sharing space service European Space Agency launches recruitment drive for women, people with disabilities Moon dust is a … [Read more...] about Zigbee inside the Mars Perseverance Mission and your smart home
BlackBerry, or the company formerly known as RIM, did all it could today in its bid for relevance. It delivered a cutting-edge smartphone, the Z10 , a solid, old-school QWERTY Q10 , and an intriguing and in some ways innovative mobile platform. I just wish I could tell you if it's enough. RIM ... er ... BlackBerry's CEO Thorsten Heins deftly played the role of affable showman. Standing in the middle of a perhaps over-large and too-empty stage (Apple’s stage is always more intimate, and I think with good reason), Heins honored those who came before him (former co-CEOs Mike Lazardis and Jim Balsillie), while clearly pushing the once-dominant mobile brand into an invigorating, though uncertain, future. As our review points out, the Blackberry Z10 offers pretty much everything a smartphone-loving consumer could ask for: excellent, comfortable-to-hold design, powerful hardware (1.5 GHz, dual core CPU), full-featured HD camera (8 MP, 1080P), super high-resolutions screen, … [Read more...] about Can the Z10 Save BlackBerry?
