Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) review: Move over Nest Hub Max

We may earn a commission for purchases using our links. Learn more . you spin me right round baby This new Echo Show is a real head-turner. Jeramy Johnson 24 Feb 2021 0 Source: Jeramy Johnson / Android Central The smart speaker market has grown quite a bit since Amazon introduced the first Echo in late 2014. However, after introducing the first Echo Show in 2017, the evolution of smart screened devices hasn't progressed nearly so quickly. There have mostly been incremental updates to the devices put out by Amazon, Google, and others like Lenovo, adding bigger screens and (marginally) better speakers, but nothing has really moved the category forward. As it has done several times before, Amazon is poised to usher in the next paradigm shift in smart speaker tech with its latest Echo device, the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen). I've had the pleasure of using just about every Alexa and Google Assistant-enabled smart speaker over the past few years, so I feel … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) review: Move over Nest Hub Max

Chipmakers in drought-hit Taiwan order water trucks to prepare for “the worst”

Taiwan chipmakers are buying water by the truckload for some of their foundries as the island widens restrictions on water supply amid a drought that could exacerbate a chip supply crunch for the global auto industry. Some automakers have already been forced to trim production, and Taiwan had received requests for help to bridge the shortage of auto chips from countries including the United States and Germany. Taiwan, a key hub in the global technology supply chain for giants such as Apple Inc, will begin on Thursday to further reduce water supply for factories in central and southern cities where major science parks are located. Water levels in several reservoirs in the island's central and southern region stand at below 20%, following months of scant rainfall and a rare typhoon-free summer. "We have planned for the worst," Taiwan Economy Minister Wang Mei-hua told reporters on Tuesday. "We hope companies can reduce water usage by 7% to 11%." With limited rainfall … [Read more...] about Chipmakers in drought-hit Taiwan order water trucks to prepare for “the worst”

France eyes new regulation to restrict early renewal of smartphones

France is weighing possible regulation to restrict the early renewal of smartphones via commercial offers by telecoms operators in a bid to lower the environmental impact of connected devices, a government official said. French telecoms operators Orange , Bouygues Telecoms and Altice Europe's SFR have for years been luring new customers by providing brand new smartphones in exchange for contractual commitments for a certain period of time, up to two years. These commercial offers entice customers to upgrade their smartphones while their previous one is still working, the French government says in a roadmap on "tech and environment" issued on Tuesday. "We're ready to adopt new measures," the government official said, without elaborating. "The aim is clearly to increase the life of terminals," the official added, referring to smartphones. The official said that the government will first ask the French telecoms authority Arcep to review the telecoms operators' … [Read more...] about France eyes new regulation to restrict early renewal of smartphones

Bill establishing cyber abuse takedown scheme for adults enters Parliament

A new Online Safety Bill that extends the cyber takedown function to adults and cuts takedown response times in half has made its way into Australian Parliament. As detailed in the Online Safety Bill 2021 , the new scheme, based on the existing cyber bullying scheme for children, provides a mechanism for those experiencing the most seriously harmful online abuse to have this material removed from the internet. It empowers Australia's eSafety Commissioner to order the removal of such material when websites, social media, and other online services fail to do so after a complaint is made. The eSafety Commissioner will have the power to issue takedown notices directly to the services, and also to the end users responsible for the abusive content. "The sharing of intimate images without consent is a terrible thing to do and causes great distress to victims," Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said, introducing the Bill on Wednesday. The Bill also expands the cyberbullying … [Read more...] about Bill establishing cyber abuse takedown scheme for adults enters Parliament
