Microsoft is rolling out some new improvements to its Edge browser this month. While the software maker announced vertical tabs nearly a year ago , the feature is finally making its way to all Edge users this month. You’ll be able to stack tabs at the side of the browser instead of the traditional long list of tabs at the top. The vertical tabs feature looks ideal for 16:9 screens, and you can click to switch between tabs or group some together. It arrives just weeks after Microsoft implemented a sleeping tabs feature in Edge that’s designed to automatically release system resources for inactive tabs when you have a large amount of tabs open. This prevents Edge tabs from hogging memory and CPU resources. Microsoft is also improving the startup experience for Edge this month. A new startup boost feature is rolling out that makes browser launches up to 41 percent faster after rebooting a device. “Initial tests show startup times improve from 29 percent to 41 percent with this … [Read more...] about Microsoft Edge gets a speedy startup feature and vertical tabs

John McAfee charged with securities fraud for ‘pump and dump’ cryptocurrency scheme
John McAfee has been charged with securities fraud over a “pump and dump” cryptocurrency scheme. Federal prosecutors unsealed a case against McAfee and his executive advisor and bodyguard Jimmy Gale Watson Jr., claiming the pair earned nearly $2 million by urging Twitter followers to invest in cryptocurrencies like Reddcoin and Dogecoin, then selling off their own holdings as the price rose. “McAfee and Watson exploited a widely used social media platform and enthusiasm among investors in the emerging cryptocurrency market to make millions through lies and deception,” said US Attorney Audrey Strauss in a statement. “The defendants allegedly used McAfee’s Twitter account to publish messages to hundreds of thousands of his Twitter followers touting various cryptocurrencies through false and misleading statements to conceal their true, self-interested motives.” The pair allegedly ran their scheme between December 2017 to October 2018. Microsoft adds Startup Boost, Sleeping Tabs to Edge build 89
This week, Microsoft announced several more features trickling down to Edge Stable from its Beta insider channel. These features include Startup Boost, Sleeping Tabs, Vertical Tabs, and a more navigable History dialog. The company also announced some welcome interface tweaks to Bing—which Microsoft insists on categorizing as Edge features, but these items seem to apply equally to Bing in any browser so far. If you're not familiar with Microsoft Edge's release and download system, there are three Insider channels (Canary, Dev, and Beta) that represent daily, weekly, and six-weekly updates in increasing order of stability. New features debut there before eventually making their way into Stable, where normal users will encounter them. If you're a Windows user, you can't actually download new builds in the Stable channel directly. Instead, you must either look for them in Windows Update or navigate to edge://settings/help in-browser and ask Edge to check for updates … [Read more...] about Microsoft adds Startup Boost, Sleeping Tabs to Edge build 89
Juicing AI: University of Florida Taps Computer Vision to Combat Citrus Disease
Florida orange juice is getting a taste of AI. With the Sunshine State’s $9 billion annual citrus crops plagued by a fruit-souring disease, researchers and businesses are tapping AI to help rescue the nation’s largest producer of orange juice. University of Florida researchers are developing AI applications for agriculture. And the technology — computer vision for smart sprayers — is now being licensed and deployed in pilot tests by CCI , an agricultural equipment company. The efforts promise to help farmers combat what’s known as “citrus greening,” the disease brought on by bacteria from the Asian citrus psyllid insect hitting farms worldwide . Citrus greening causes patchy leaves and green fruit and can quickly decimate orchards. The agricultural equipment supplier has seen farmers lose one-third of the orchard acreage in Florida from the onslaught of citrus greening. “It’s having a huge impact on the state of Florida, California, Brazil, China, Mexico — the entire … [Read more...] about Juicing AI: University of Florida Taps Computer Vision to Combat Citrus Disease
