Jordan Palmer 12 Dec 2020 Source: Android Central As NVIDIA proclaims in every piece of marketing, the Shield Android TV box is "the streamer for gamers." It also happens to be the best TV streaming box for playing games developed for Android TV from the Google Play Store. Want to start playing? Here are some games to try. If you're wanting some more games to play on the go, then be sure to check out our best Android games list! Note: The NVIDIA Shield TV (2019) is not quite as gamer-ready as its predecessors and the Shield TV Pro (2019). NVIDIA went with a 32-bit version of Android TV and also downgraded the RAM on its tube-shaped streaming dongle to just 2GB. This has affected the base model's compatibility with some 64-bit games from the Play Store including several on this list (Metal Gear Solid 2, Half-Life 2, The Witness, and Portal). Same bottom line hides sharp disagreement in Congress over energy research

Legislators in both houses of Congress agree that science at the Department of Energy (DOE) should get a slight boost—0.9%—next year. But how they get to that number is quite another story. This week the full Senate is expected to approve a $5.4 billion budget for DOE’s Office of Science that would eliminate support for an international fusion project in France and trim domestic fusion research. The cuts allow legislators to give relatively healthy boosts to the office's five other research programs within an overall tight budget. To reach the same total, the spending panel in the House of Representatives has proposed continuing to fund ITER and fusion but cutting biological and environmental research and holding the other programs to tiny increases. For years, observers have been warning that the U.S. commitment to ITER, the gargantuan fusion experiment under construction in Cadarache, France, has been squeezing other DOE basic research programs. That tension shows through … [Read more...] about Same bottom line hides sharp disagreement in Congress over energy research

Nvidia DLSS support is coming to Outriders, Call of Duty: Warzone, and more

In brief: Nvidia's all-digital CES keynote kicked off today, and it was a pretty exciting one. The biggest reveal was the new GeForce RTX 3060, but the company also announced that its RTX, DLSS, and Reflex technologies will be coming to several existing and upcoming titles. Let's delve into those a bit below. We'll start with the games that are only set to receive DLSS (and not RTX or Reflex), of which there are currently two. First up is Call of Duty Warzone, Activision's immensely-popular free-to-play battle royale (available exclusively through the Battle.net client). The game is available now, but DLSS support is coming "soon," which probably means "sometime in the next couple of months," if we had to guess. We don't have any specific performance numbers to pore over here, but the new CoD Black Ops Cold War does support the tech. Since Cold War is running on a similar engine to Warzone, you might be able to look at the former's DLSS benchmarks to determine what sort of FPS … [Read more...] about Nvidia DLSS support is coming to Outriders, Call of Duty: Warzone, and more

Why we need to rebuild internet search, putting user privacy first

Everyone who browses the internet is familiar with advertising. Regardless of what browser , search engine or social media app we use to search the web, every day we are peppered with ads that prey on our aspirations and insecurities to sell us products. An entire generation has grown up believing that if you want to check in on your friends, learn new skills or just entertain yourself then the cost of doing business is companies will exploit your personal data to sell you things. So why is this the case? When the internet’s infrastructure was first being built, the major platforms understandably needed to make money early on, and decided that showing advertising on top of content was the quickest solution. This allowed them to satisfy their investors while getting on with the business of building new technology. Problems later emerged because what started out as a quick fix to a short-term problem turned into a central part of the internet’s architecture. Like anything else in … [Read more...] about Why we need to rebuild internet search, putting user privacy first

Today’s best tech deals: Bose headphones,

Today's Dealmaster includes a good discount on Bose's Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, the white version of which is down to $299 at various retailers. That's $80 off Bose's MSRP, about $65 off the street price we typically see online, and tied for the best price we've tracked. Further Reading The Ars Technica ultimate buying guide for your home office setup While we generally recommend Sony's WH-1000XM4 as the top choice among wireless noise-canceling headphones, this Bose pair is a strong alternative. Its battery life isn't as good, but its metal headband gives the design a more premium feel, and it offers a more neutral sound profile than the XM4's more bass-heavy default signature. And though its active noise cancellation isn't quite as effective as the XM4's at maximum, it's not terribly far off. Perhaps more importantly, Bose's companion app lets you customize the strength of the noise-canceling effect on a 10-point scale, so you can lessen the intensity if … [Read more...] about Today’s best tech deals: Bose headphones,
