Battle of the widgets Activating launchers, theme packs, and widgets felt as transformative as the world turning to color in Pleasantville . Michael L Hicks 25 Feb 2021 5 Source: Android Central As part of my Switching to Android journey, I'm documenting the differences between the two operating systems, exploring the Android features that you might take for granted, but that iOS users may find a compelling reason to switch sides. My first couple of days with Android 11 and One UI 3.1 underwhelmed me. I successfully transferred my compatible iOS apps over, and there they sat as plain little circles or rounded squares, crowded in on one another. In particular, my Pixel 3a icons looked insubstantial, the display so cramped that several app names ended in ellipses (i.e., Google P...). Bad aesthetics didn't exactly make me enthusiastic about the transition. Before iOS 14, iPhone users happily lived with the same aesthetics and similar UI for … [Read more...] about Switching to Android: iOS 14 may look great, but Android launchers still put it to shame

Justice Department gives judge big Google document request
The Justice Department asked the judge hearing its antitrust fight with Alphabet's Google for a huge list of documents from the search and advertising giant, including some about Facebook and Google's Chrome browser, according to a court filing on Wednesday. Among the documents requested was communications with third parties regarding "any form of cooperation in responding to antitrust investigations or litigation, including communications with Facebook regarding 'Jedi Blue.'" A group of states led by Texas had alleged that Google and Facebook, the two biggest players in online advertising, used a series of deals to consolidate their market power. But the issue was not included in the federal complaint against Google. Google objected to the document demand, and others, as "overly broad" and potentially privileged but said it was willing to discuss the matter. The documents are requested as part of a pre-trial process for a Justice Department antitrust … [Read more...] about Justice Department gives judge big Google document request
Xiaomi ties up with BYD, DBG and Radiant to boost smartphone, smart TV manufacturing in India
Xiaomi said it has partnered with contract manufacturers BYD, DBG and Radiant to strengthen its 'Make in India' efforts. The Chinese company has tied up with BYD and DBG for smartphones , while Radiant will help augment the company's capacity of smart TVs in India. The DBG unit in Haryana is already operational and will increase Xiaomi's monthly manufacturing capacity by about 20 per cent, Xiaomi India Managing Director Manu Jain said during a virtual briefing. He added that the BYD unit in Tamil Nadu will be operational soon. Currently, Xiaomi has 5 campuses in India, where its partners Foxconn and Flex assemble phones in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Majority of components used in these phones are either locally manufactured, assembled or … [Read more...] about Xiaomi ties up with BYD, DBG and Radiant to boost smartphone, smart TV manufacturing in India
Russia eyes tax on global digital services firms
Russia wants to tax foreign companies earning profits from digital services provided in Russia, Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Sazanov said in an interview with accounting firm KPMG published on Wednesday. Finance Minister Anton Siluanov last year promised not to raise taxes after Russia had targeted the mining, tobacco and oil industries to help plug holes in its budget. A rise of two percentage points in income tax for wealthy Russians came into effect on Jan. 1, as did a tax on deposits. "Large foreign digital companies are earning profits from providing services in Russia, which in principle are not currently taxed in our country because often they do not have offices here," Sazanov told KPMG, without naming the foreign firms he had in mind. "Therefore, we will strive to change the situation and tax this profit." The OECD is currently steering a group of nearly 140 countries including Russia negotiating the first update in a generation to rules for taxing cross-border … [Read more...] about Russia eyes tax on global digital services firms
How coronavirus stimulus funds helped one state create a ‘broadband miracle’
This story is part of Crossing the Broadband Divide , CNET's coverage of how the country is working toward making broadband access universal. When Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and lawmakers in the Mississippi legislature got $1.2 billion in federal money from the first stimulus bill in March, they decided to do something different. They used a portion of the funds to supercharge the rollout of high-speed broadband to the most underserved areas of the state in an effort to close the digital divide. They went to rural electric co-ops -- private, independent electric utilities owned by the members they serve -- many of which were left gobsmacked by the offer, according to David O'Bryan, general manager of Delta Electric Power Association, which now serves Carroll and Grenada counties with broadband. Many of these co-ops had been preparing to deploy networks but lacked the cash to begin a major project, especially in the most remote and sparsely populated parts of their territories. … [Read more...] about How coronavirus stimulus funds helped one state create a ‘broadband miracle’
