6 Miracle Birth Stories Beyond Jesus

Christmas, in the religious sense at least, centers on one basic tenet of Christian belief: that Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born to a virgin mother. A recent Pew poll found that about three-quarters of Americans believe in the Virgin Birth . But stories of miraculous conception aren't unique to Christianity. Unconventional births can be found far outside the manger in mythologies and religious traditions from ancient Egypt to the Aztec empire; they've even become part of Civil War lore. LiveScience brings you the story behind six miracle births. 1. Horus Horus, ancient Egypt's falcon-headed patron god of kings, was conceived after the murder of his father Osiris . As the story goes, Seth killed his brother Osiris and scattered the dismembered pieces of his body. Osiris' wife Isis picked up the pieces of her husband — all but his penis, which was thrown into the Nile and eaten by a fish, according to some accounts. How Non-Profits Are Tapping Internet Memes & Pop Culture

The Stars of Social Good Series is supported by CITGO and the Fueling Good Campaign , helping to change the world through contributions to local charities. Spend enough time on the Internet and you'll inevitably bump into a "meme" or two. Memes are concepts, links or media that spread across the Internet. You know when people say "It went viral"? The Red Cross Has Tiger Blood The American Red Cross hit on pop culture gold when Charlie Sheen went on … [Read more...] about How Non-Profits Are Tapping Internet Memes & Pop Culture

Bump Introduces Bump Pay, Allows You to Pay Friends By Tapping Phones

When PayPal updated its mobile app March 15 it removed one way you were able to send payments: Bump , a feature that was available in the app since 2010. Starting Thursday, however, Bump is offering the capability on its own in the form of a new standalone app called Bump Pay. Bump Pay lets you pay a friend by typing in the amount of money you'd like to send, and then tapping your phone against your friend's phone. Money is sent via PayPal, and the only transaction fees you'll be charged are those coming from PayPal. If you have enough money for the transaction in your PayPal account or have your PayPal account linked to a bank account, then those fees will be zero. "We think of Bump Pay as solving a specific problem — helping people repay each other in person after having dinner or after paying for gas on a road trip, " Dave Lieb, CEO and co-founder of Bump told Mashable . "Bump is focused on making technology simpler and our Bump app is a quick and easy way for people to … [Read more...] about Bump Introduces Bump Pay, Allows You to Pay Friends By Tapping Phones

But Xiaomi users will have an additional feature — they can also tap to pay on public transportation in six big cities there. Specifically, those cities are Shanghai and Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangdong, Suzhou and Wuhan. This makes Xiaomi the first smartphone maker to successfully support contactless payments on buses and trains in China, beating bigger players to the punch. SEE ALSO: Kanye West just showed us the future of mobile payments Mashable understands that the payment feature called Mi Pay comes to existing Xiaomi phones that have NFC chips. Xiaomi already started trialling public transit payment earlier this year in Shanghai and Shenzhen, based on local reports .
