Director of ‘The Fifth Estate’ responds to Julian Assange’s attacks: ‘He just flat-out makes things up’

Director Bill Condon has shown the ability to move between genres with ease, shifting from the the likes of Gods and Monsters and Kinsey to Dreamgirls and the two-part Twilight closer Breaking Dawn . For his latest film, he’s taking on another project inspired by real-life events: the WikiLeaks origin story The Fifth Estate . The movie arrives amidst a storm of criticism from WikiLeaks itself, with the organization publishing script reviews and even suggesting alternative viewing options for UK filmgoers. We spoke with the director about the intense reaction, what it says about Julian Assange, and how whistleblowers like Edward Snowden are continuing the conversation that WikiLeaks started. Hi-res censorship: Metahaven on Edward Snowden and rebranding WikiLeaks

Metahaven is a graphic design collective based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Since its launch in 2007, the team — led by Daniel Van der Velden and Vinca Kruk — has pursued collaborations with organizations that traditionally don't seek out graphic design as a platform or medium. Examples include the whistleblower platform WikiLeaks, the Icelandic Modern Media Institute (IMMI), and the diplomatic advisory group Independent Diplomat. An interdisciplinary group of writers, editors, critics, and curators, the collective has been able to expand upon the foundation of designer as form-maker and break free from the traditional confines of the studio. Its avant-garde aesthetics and intellectual approaches have lead to exhibitions at the Walker Art Center, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Metahaven has also written extensively about the internet as a political and creative space — anyone interested is encouraged to check out the book … [Read more...] about Hi-res censorship: Metahaven on Edward Snowden and rebranding WikiLeaks

Guccifer 2.0 posts DCCC docs, says they’re from Clinton Foundation

WikiLeaks celebrated its tenth anniversary on Tuesday by teasing a release of documents that would damage presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. But when Julian Assange failed to release anything new, the individual who refers to himself as Guccifer 2.0 posted what he claimed were files from the Clinton Foundation's servers. "Many of you have been waiting for this, some even asked me to do it," Guccifer 2.0, or whoever is posting under that name, wrote in a blog post. "So, this is the moment. I hacked the Clinton Foundation server and downloaded hundreds of thousands of docs and donors' databases. Hillary Clinton and her staff don't even bother about the information security. It was just a matter of time to gain access to the Clinton Foundation server." Ars contacted Guccifer 2.0, or whomever runs his Twitter account. He claimed the files came directly from the Clinton Foundation server—but declined to say how he got access to them ("I prefer to keep it to me yet"). Further … [Read more...] about Guccifer 2.0 posts DCCC docs, says they’re from Clinton Foundation
