It’s a good year for old, crappy phones. The dusty old phone in your desk drawer running Android frozen-dessert-something-or-other — the one that might have a cracked screen — saw its stock go up recently with two generous trade-in promotions. T-Mobile and Verizon are both offering to take your old, damaged phone off your hands and replace it with a shiny new 5G model. There are a couple of reasons for this generosity. Verizon, in particular, has written some big checks to pay for new C-band frequencies — highly desirable spectrum for 5G that offers good range and speed. The company has reassured its shareholders that the hefty expenditure will help grow its customer base and increase the amount of money it makes on existing accounts. It told investors at its March analyst event that “with C-band included, we think step-ups to premium [plans] will only accelerate.” So it’s unsurprising that the cracked phone deal requires a commitment to a “select unlimited plan.” Meanwhile, … [Read more...] about Verizon and T-Mobile want your business more than ever right now

Why it matters: In what could be more bad news for those hoping to see an end to the chip shortage crisis, crypto mining giant Bitmain has reportedly tapped TSMC to create an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) using the Taiwanese firm’s 5nm fabrication process. According to a report from DigiTimes (via Tom’s Hardware ), Bitmain’s 5nm chip orders with TSMC will begin at the start of the third quarter before ramping up substantially in Q1 2022. The improved power-efficiency of the foundry’s N5 process would be well suited for mining, and with Bitcoin and Ethereum prices reaching record highs, demand is likely to remain high for a while. The concern here is that Bitmain’s order could put pressure on other 5nm-based products. Right now, the biggest N5 customer is Apple, which uses the process for its A14 Bionic (iPhone 12, iPad Air) and M1 system-on-chips in the latest Macs and iPad Pros. AMD’s Zen 4 architecture is set to be fabricated on the 5nm process node and is … [Read more...] about Bitmain places orders for 5nm mining chips with TSMC

A provider of drone-in-a-box systems for applications like inspection and monitoring received a new certification that will make it easier to provide solutions to the defense sector. Easy Aerial recently announced its Easy Guard ground station—essentially a portable hangar for a drone—has received its certification of Military Standard Specification MIL-STD 810G, a standard and broadly recognized defense-industry certification that designates technology as field-ready military equipment. This is significant because it underlines the growing crossover between UAV solutions developed for commercial applications like inspection and pursuits like surveillance and situational awareness that are used by police and military customers. A number of providers now move fluidly between commercial industries and public security & defense, making some privacy advocates uncomfortable . But for a sector that's growing but still trying to catch its footing as the regulatory environment … [Read more...] about Portable drone hangar gets military certification
