Both local and international space companies have stressed the importance of Australia building its own talent pool to ensure the country's space industry will succeed. "I think space is seen as cool. It's something to be involved in but I think the problem is that people don't necessarily know how to get into it," Airbus told the Standing Committee of Industry, Innovation, Science and Resources, as part of its inquiry into developing Australia's space industry. "I think there's a problem of space being inaccessible, both in terms of actual space and space as an industry where it tends to be seen that the scientists are the ones that are needed. They obviously are but then you need mathematicians, but you also need business people, you need people with strategy backgrounds, you need people with accountancy backgrounds, you need a whole range of people to make space work to make it a commercial enterprise. "You need to make it a commercial enterprise so people can see that way in. … [Read more...] about Industry wants to make space more accessible to grow Australia’s talent pool

Inside the stunning Black mythos of Drexciya and its Afrofuturist ’90s techno
“ARE DREXCIYANS WATER-BREATHING, AQUATICALLY MUTATED DESCENDANTS OF THOSE UNFORTUNATE VICTIMS OF HUMAN GREED? ... DID THEY MIGRATE FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER BASIN AND ON TO THE GREAT LAKES OF MICHIGAN? DO THEY WALK AMONG US? ARE THEY MORE ADVANCED THAN US, AND WHY DO THEY MAKE THEIR STRANGE MUSIC? WHAT IS THEIR QUEST?” With those all-caps words, musician and writer James Stinson wrote the constitution for the mythic, rhythmic nation of Drexciya —a world that he and partner Gerald Donald created in the liner notes of their experimental music project. Their combined work, in the form of five EPs of cutting-edge techno music, did not necessarily sound so politically or culturally charged. Because Stinson and Donald did not participate in interviews or widely tour in support of their albums, Drexciya's listeners were left to look at the stories and questions that covered the liner notes and artwork printed on the releases' vinyl and CD versions. Should you … [Read more...] about Inside the stunning Black mythos of Drexciya and its Afrofuturist ’90s techno

Harish Jonnalagadda 28 Feb 2021 0 Source: Android Central Phone manufacturers have waged a war on bezels over the last four years, and the result is that even budget phones these days have ultra-thin bezels on all sides. Thin bezels mean you get a larger screen-to-body ratio, allowing brands to cram a larger screen without increasing the dimensions of the phone. For some context, the Galaxy S9+ had a 6.2-inch panel, and the Galaxy S21 offers the same screen size even though it is 6.4mm shorter. Xiaomi was the one to kick off this particular trend back in 2016 with the Mi Mix, which offered a 91.3% screen-to-body ratio. Xiaomi achieved this by changing the location of the front camera module to the bottom bezels, leading to an all-screen design. … [Read more...] about Why don’t we see any more pop-up selfie cameras?
Insiders say Google lacked the focus and discipline to run a successful game studio
In context: Part of what led to Stadia Games and Entertainment division's early demise is the underwhelming number of subscribers the platform managed to garner since November 2019. Although Google has not posted official numbers, Bloomberg quotes insiders stating Stadia missed controller sales and monthly active user count goals "by hundreds of thousands." The low adoption rates may be attributed to how the platform was marketed and released. This is arguably the biggest waste of money and resources in Google's history. Stadia broke from Google's typical "start small and build" philosophy of product development. Unlike other Google products with long beta cycles, like Gmail, it was marketed and hyped as a full service that was ready to kill off consoles. Stadia head Phil Harrison said it was "the future of gaming." Speaking with anonymous sources, including former employees of the now-defunct development house, Bloomberg and Wired uncovered some details surrounding what was … [Read more...] about Insiders say Google lacked the focus and discipline to run a successful game studio
