Using Kinect to order pizza is so last year — soon you'll be able to grab a pie with a Siri-like virtual assistant. Domino's has just announced that it's launching a beta for a new voice-ordering tool for its mobile apps, which should make the process of getting a pizza even lazier. Nicknamed "Dom," the assistant is able to recognize "natural speech patterns" so that you can tell it that you want to order a pizza and it will respond by asking you what kind. Domino's says that the service "delivers a human-like, conversational customer service experience," that should speed up the ordering process compared to dealing with an actual human. It took nearly 20 years, but Domino's, the company behind those HeatWave delivery bags from the '90s , has outdone itself with a fleet of modified pizza delivery cars , designed so your pizza and sauce get to your house safe and... How would you like to have your pizza delivered by a drone? The idea is far from impossible, as proven by Domino's UK franchise, which posted a YouTube video showing a pizza being delivered by an unmanned flying vehicle — the DomiCopter. In the video, the DomiCopter — created and operated by a drone company called AeroSight — appears to safely deliver a pizza over a large distance. Though it all may seem like a publicity stunt, the UK branch of Domino's seems quite serious about it. In a press release, the company talks about launching a Domino's Flight Academy "should the DomiCopter delivery service take off." It may be a geek's dream come true, but it won't happen in the U.S. very soon, though. DoorDash has acquired salad-making robot startup Chowbotics, the companies announced Monday. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but the Chowbotics team have all become DoorDash employees, and the company will operate independently within DoorDash. “We have long admired the work that Chowbotics has done to increase access to fresh meals, with its groundbreaking robotics product and vision,” DoorDash co-founder Stanley Tang said in statement emailed to The Verge. “With the Chowbotics team on board, we can explore new use cases and customers, providing another service to help our merchants grow.” Chowbotics was founded in 2014, and its fresh food robot Sally — a rectangular machine that’s essentially a salad vending machine — can create customizable salads, grain and poke bowls, parfaits, cereals, and snacks all within a small space.
