I don't know what you're paying for home internet service, but I'll wager it's more than you'd like it to be -- and probably inching up all the time. For example, Comcast charges me $106 a month just for internet (I ditched TV about a year ago), a rate that seems to increase a few bucks every couple months. So when I learned that T-Mobile Home Internet was available in my area, promising unlimited high-speed service for a flat $50 monthly -- equipment, taxes and fees included -- I jumped at the chance to try it. (Note that availability is limited for the time being; the service is slowly rolling out to cities across the US and is technically in a pilot phase right now. That means things could change when there's an official rollout.) See it at T-Mobile Obviously, I had concerns. Would it be fast enough for everyday computing? Could it handle 4K streaming video? Would it work with my mesh network and support the many, many connected devices in my house? Perhaps … [Read more...] about I signed up for T-Mobile’s $50 unlimited home internet service. Mother Nature Still in Charge
The Myanmar cyclone. The earthquake off the coast of Japan. The Chilean volcano. Has Earth gone bonkers? Not at all. This level of natural activity is normal for Earth, scientists say. "Mother Nature is just reminding us that she is in charge," Bill Patzert, a climatologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., told LiveScience . That also means the recent Midwestern quake (centered in Illinois) and temblors near Reno, though unnerving and frightening to locals, were just another day for Planet Earth. Reference point A look back at events in 2007 serves to remind just how wild this world routinely is. EM-DAT, the OFDA/CRED International Disaster Database, tracks natural disasters in which either 10 or more people were killed, 100 or more people were affected, a State of Emergency was declared, or there was a call for international assistance. In the United States in 2007, EM-DAT tallied four such tornado disasters, five winter storms, seven … [Read more...] about Mother Nature Still in Charge
Spotify HiFi release date, price, quality, features, rumors and song catalog
When it arrives later this year, Spotify HiFi will deliver some of your favorite songs in lossless, CD-quality audio to close the gap to services like Tidal. According to Spotify, high-quality music streaming is consistently one of the most requested new features by its users who, previously, have been limited to 320kbps. Worse, folks who don’t have Premium are only getting half of that (160kbps) which is equivalent to listening to an MP3. HiFi, on the other hand, will offer CD-quality, lossless audio at upwards of 1411kpbs – offering over four times the amount of data you currently hear when streaming a song. The service will be available in “select markets” to start, and while Spotify hasn’t said exactly how much the service will cost just yet, it sounds like it’s going to be more than the basic Spotify Premium price of $9.99 / £9.99 / AU$11.99 per month and there’s no guarantee that every song in the entire Spotify catalog will have a HiFi version available. That said, … [Read more...] about Spotify HiFi release date, price, quality, features, rumors and song catalog
Hundreds of skeletons fill this remote Himalayan lake. How did they get there?
High in the Himalayas, a four-to-five-day trek from the nearest village, sits an unassuming glacial lake called Roopkund. The spot is beautiful, a dollop of jewel-toned water amid rough gravel and scree, but hardly out of the ordinary for the rugged landscape — except for the hundreds of human bones scattered within and around the lake. These bones, belonging to between 300 and 800 people, have been a mystery since a forest ranger first reported them to the broader world in 1942. Lately, though, the mystery has only deepened. In 2019, a new genetic analysis of the ancient DNA in the bones, detailed in the journal Nature Communications , found that at least 14 of the people who died at the lake probably weren't from South Asia. Instead, their genes match those of modern-day people of the eastern Mediterranean. Related: 11 famous places that are littered with dead bodies What's more, these bones were far newer than most of the others at the lake, which date to … [Read more...] about Hundreds of skeletons fill this remote Himalayan lake. People Have Stopped Talking About the Missing Plane
Twenty-four days have passed since Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished shortly after takeoff, and tweets about the missing plane have hit an all-time low. The missing plane was only mentioned 170,657 times on Twitter on Sunday, according to data from Sysomos , a Marketwired company and leader in social analytics and intelligence. That's a 92% drop from a high of 2,343,994 Twitter mentions on March 24, when Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak held a live press briefing to say the plane’s journey ended in the middle of the south Indian Ocean. See also: Malaysia Airlines Search Area Is the Worst Place on Earth to Lose a Plane CNN, for its part, is continuing full steam ahead in its wall-to-wall coverage of the saga. The network's coverage has propelled it to record audience highs, with Anderson Cooper beating out Bill O'Reilly in the primetime news demo ratings, CNN's New Day beating Morning Joe “in both total and demo for eleven straight days,” and record-high … [Read more...] about People Have Stopped Talking About the Missing Plane
