Court: Hijacking ex-employee’s LinkedIn account violates PA law

March 15, 2013 by arstechnica.com

A couple of clear lessons emerge from the incident. First, if employers encourage employees to use social media accounts as part of their work, they should have clear, written policies about who owns them and what will happen to them when the employee leaves the company. Second, filing a lawsuit over control of a social media account is generally a waste of time and money. Even if the plaintiff wins the lawsuit, the damages are unlikely to be sufficient to cover the expenses of litigation. … [Read more...] about Court: Hijacking ex-employee’s LinkedIn account violates PA law

Memristor that forgets makes a good model neuron

September 28, 2016 by arstechnica.com

Recently, however, there have been a variety of attempts to build hardware that acts more like a collection of neurons than anything that Apple or Intel have designed. While some of that uses traditional silicon-based transistors, other efforts have explored a relatively newer development, the memristor. Now, an international collaboration that includes everyone from Hewlett Packard Enterprise to the Air Force has designed a memristor that behaves a bit more like a neuron: its recent activity influences how it responds. This is accomplished by allowing metal to diffuse within the solid memristor. … [Read more...] about Memristor that forgets makes a good model neuron

Cable lobby says Google Fiber doesn’t need Title II to get pole access

January 9, 2015 by arstechnica.com

Google's letter to the FCC on December 30 argued that the company does not receive Section 224 protections. "Section 224 confers upon cable system operators and telecommunications carriers the right of 'nondiscriminatory access to any pole, duct, conduit, or right-of-way owned or controlled' by a utility," Google wrote. "Currently, therefore, a BIAS [broadband Internet access service] provider that does not offer its broadband access service on a common-carriage basis, and does not offer other cable television or telecommunications services over its network, lacks the federal protection Section 224 affords to traditional cable systems and telecommunications carriers." … [Read more...] about Cable lobby says Google Fiber doesn’t need Title II to get pole access

House passes GOP immigration bill for science, math grads

November 30, 2012 by arstechnica.com

About half of the diversity visas would go to African immigrants, and some minority Democratic representatives today accused the bill of being shortsighted or even racist. Shutting down the main program that provides visas to African immigrants "is racist, if not in its intent, then certainly in its effect," said Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), according to The Hill report. "Republicans have just received a historically low vote from minorities in the past election, yet they want to create an immigration system that gives visas with one hand while taking visas away from minorities with the other." … [Read more...] about House passes GOP immigration bill for science, math grads
