August 24, 2017 by www.sciencemag.org

In that, Murphy’s sentiments reflect those of some analysts whose views on climate are at odds with the Trump administration. David Roberts, now writing on climate and energy at Vox, wrote a much-cited column for Grist a few years ago dissecting economic calculations used to determine how much it is worth today to limit climate-related harms generations in the future. He warned, “They are social and ethical disputes being waged under cover of math, as though they are nothing but technical matters to be determined by ‘experts.’” … [Read more...] about Trump’s attack on social cost of carbon could end up hurting his fossil fuel push

Iconic James Bond locations in real life: How to travel like 007

October 31, 2020 by www.cnet.com

The ancient city at the mouth of the Bosporus is as much a character in the second Bond installment as Bond or snarling henchman Donald Grant. Sean Connery traverses many of the city's top tourist sights like the Grand Bazaar and the Hagia Sophia, where one of the film's pivotal scenes -- he gets the plans for the Soviet embassy from Tatiana Romanova -- takes place. Completed in 537, the Hagia Sophia served as an Eastern Orthodox cathedral when the city was called Constantinople and was the capital of the Byzantine Empire. After the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople in 1453, it became a mosque and gained minarets. Now a museum, it has an immense scale that's as dazzling and as impressive as the Parthenon or the Colosseum. Walk in, stand under the 183-foot dome and just take it in. Yeah, there are exhibits to read, but just gawking is fine. … [Read more...] about Iconic James Bond locations in real life: How to travel like 007

The Orion spacecraft is now 15 years old and has flown into space just once

December 15, 2020 by arstechnica.com

This moment has echoes of 2008, when the incoming Obama administration was faced with the Constellation program to return humans to the Moon and found it over budget and far behind schedule. This transition team was led by Lori Garver, who would go on to become the space agency's deputy administrator, and called a blue-ribbon panel of experts led by Norm Augustine to review Constellation. "Our concerns were confirmed by the Augustine panel of experts," she told Ars. "After full deliberation, the Administration requested cancellation of the program, including Orion." … [Read more...] about The Orion spacecraft is now 15 years old and has flown into space just once
