This isn’t the Android 12 theming system, but it shows us how hard system themes are to get right
automatic fail These aren't actual screenshots, but the widgets and elements within them remind us how far we have to go. Ara Wagoner 10 Feb 2021 0 Source: Ara Wagoner / Android Central There are few things more liberating than being able to take your phone and make it look completely and utterly new. From adding new widgets and wallpapers to trying out new Android launchers , there's a lot of ways to jazz up a phone, but all of them pale in comparison to the all-encompassing roulette wheel that is system theming. System theming is an area where Google's core Android has lagged behind Android manufacturers for years and years. From Samsung's One UI — and TouchWiz, may it rot in pieces — to Oppo's Color OS to Xiaomi's MIUI to OnePlus's Oxygen OS with its colorful accents and wonderfully simplified options, manufacturers have always been willing to build over what Google gave them in a desperate effort to inject some personality and pizzazz … [Read more...] about This isn’t the Android 12 theming system, but it shows us how hard system themes are to get right

The Great Green Wall could save Africa. But can the massive forestry effort learn from past mistakes?
By Rachel Cernansky Feb. 11, 2021 , 1:18 PM After returning home from college to northwest Cameroon in 2004, Tabi Joda felt a sense of profound loss. Trees that once bore fruit, provided medicine, and created shade had been cut down. Rich soils had turned to dust. “The land I used to know as a forest was no longer a forest,” he recalls. Joda, a business consultant, got to work, calling on what he’d learned in school and from local knowledge passed down over generations. He collected seeds, started a tree nursery, and launched an agroforestry initiative that enlisted local people in planting trees. They chose species that provided food and timber, supported livelihoods, and helped wildlife thrive. The effort soon spread to nearby communities. And Joda ultimately became a vocal advocate for an even bigger dream: the Great Green Wall, which aims to transform the lives of some 100 million people by planting a mosaic of trees, shrubs, and grasses along a corridor stretching some 8000 … [Read more...] about The Great Green Wall could save Africa. In East, Snow Is a No-Show
The holiday season continues to be a no-show for snow in the eastern half of the country. Not many people saw a white Christmas this year, and today (Dec. 29) snow is still scarce, with only 23 percent of the country covered by snow. This time last year, 47 percent of the country was covered by the white stuff. Just 7 percent of the Midwest is snow-covered today, compared with 57 percent on Dec. 29, 2010. Last year at this time, the Deep South was still a-buzz after an unusually big snowfall, and the Northeast was still digging out from the big post-Christmas blizzard . But December has largely been a bust for snow this year; only parts of the West have seen any snow. Last year, the lake-effect snow machine was running full blast in the Northeast and Midwest. The snow was so bad in Buffalo, N.Y., even the snowplows got stuck. Several feet of snow fell in western New York and in cities around the Great Lakes. That hasn't happened yet this year, despite the snow season … [Read more...] about In East, Snow Is a No-Show
