Startups in IPO mode in unfamiliar talent hunt

An IPO means lots of things, including big roles for CFO , investor relations managers, legal & compliance head, top-tier marketing personnel, communications and HR. For startups looking to go public – Policybazaar , Zomato, Flipkart, Nykaa, Grofers and Delhivery among others – and used to hiring for tech, product, and supply chain management roles, IPO prep means hiring decisions most founders have little to no experience in. There aren’t many public-market-ready CFOs in the tech ecosystem in India as there are in the US or China, Shailendra Singh, managing director at VC firm Sequoia Capital , had told ET recently. The VC firm has built a six people team in India, headed by Piyush Gupta, that is working with over a dozen of its portfolio companies to help them chart their public company journey. “We are doing the hard work of building those skills, building the foundations, and helping our CFOs get up to speed and learn,” adds Singh. Often companies put … [Read more...] about Startups in IPO mode in unfamiliar talent hunt

Government picks 81 regional sites to fund through AU$90 million program

The Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Michael McCormack, alongside Communications Minister Paul Fletcher and Minister for Regional Health, Regional Communications and Local Government Mark Coulton announced on Friday that 81 sites have been selected to carve up the AU$90 million available under the Regional Connectivity Program. Thanks to co-funding arrangements with recipients of the grants, state and local-level governments, regional businesses, and community organisations, the total spent will be in excess of AU$180 million. However, details on the successful projects are scant. Besides wireless networks for the Gundagai, Cootamundra, and Snowy Valleys areas in New South Wales, the rest are a mystery and will be announced in coming weeks. "Grants have been allocated on a competitive basis, with the value of successful projects ranging from AU$80,500 for targeted mobile capacity upgrades in small towns to AU$8,750,000 for the deployment of large-scale fixed wireless broadband … [Read more...] about Government picks 81 regional sites to fund through AU$90 million program

Camera footage from wolf’s collar reveals a very good boy

Have you ever wanted to watch a wolf hunt freshwater fish? Thanks to the Voyageurs Wolf Project from the University of Minnesota, you can see it on YouTube any time you like. The researchers with the project trapped V089, a lone wolf, sedated him, and then strapped on the Vectronic-Aerospace camera collar. The collar recorded video in 30 second bursts during daylight hours, for a total of 7 minutes a day. The footage is very cool , though some of it is obscured by V089’s fur. (“The wolf’s beard needed a little trim... lesson learned,” one video caption says.) They found that V089 was clever enough to hunt near a beaver dam, going after fish that were trapped by the obstacle. “Up until recently, wolves hunting and killing freshwater fish is something that people didn’t even really know happened,” researcher Thomas Gable told Gizmodo . The Voyageurs Wolf Project documented wolves hunting freshwater fish in one pack a few years ago, but assumed that it was just a weird … [Read more...] about Camera footage from wolf’s collar reveals a very good boy
