Samsung develops high-bandwidth memory with onboard AI processing

What just happened? Samsung this week announced it has developed what it is calling the industry’s first High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) with built-in artificial intelligence. The new processing-in-memory, PIM for short, brings AI computing capabilities directly inside the memory subsystem, accelerating processing within data centers, high-performance computers and AI-enabled mobile apps. As Samsung explains, most computing systems today are based on the von Neumann architecture . This sequential processing approach involves separate CPU and memory units with data constantly being shuffled between them, creating a bottleneck. (A von Neumann architecture scheme, via Kapooht) Samsung’s HBM-PIM puts a DRAM-optimized AI engine inside each memory bank. This enables parallel processing and minimizes data movement, improving performance and reducing power consumption. According to Samsung, when used in conjunction with Samsung’s HBM2 Aquabolt , the architecture can deliver more … [Read more...] about Samsung develops high-bandwidth memory with onboard AI processing

Why the Google Nest Hub (2nd generation) isn’t suited to those who share a bed

Google’s newest smart display, the Google Nest Hub (2nd generation) , went on sale this week, and it’s the first smart display on the market that can track your sleep. The smart display includes Soli radar technology – already present in the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 X L smartphones – to monitor your breathing and movement, while the built-in microphones and ambient light and temperature sensors will detect coughing, snoring plus light and temperature changes in your bedroom. All of this information is analyzed by the device to help you understand how much sleep you’re getting and what, if anything, is impacting its quality. But just how accurate is this sleep data when it’s captured by a device that isn’t attached to you, and is it the same as using one of the best smartwatches or best fitness trackers ? Following just over a week with the Google Nest Hub (2nd generation) I’m disappointed with the results, and feel that if you share a bed then it isn’t the best option. … [Read more...] about Why the Google Nest Hub (2nd generation) isn’t suited to those who share a bed

At 38.5% vaccinated, US may be running low on people eager for a shot

The US logged another 4 million or so vaccinations Friday, bringing the total doses administered in the country over 200 million at the time of writing. Over 127 million adults—38.5 percent of the US population—have received at least one shot. Over 80 million adults—24 percent of the US population—are now fully vaccinated. The seven-day rolling average of US vaccinations per day is now around 3.35 million and the Biden administration is on track to make its latest goal of 200 million vaccinations within the first 100 days in office. Even with a current pause in use of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, Biden officials expect availability of vaccine to remain strong. “Vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer are still widely available,” Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a White House COVID-19 press briefing Friday. “We continue to work with pharmacies, states, and FEMA to make sure the vaccine supply remains robust across the … [Read more...] about At 38.5% vaccinated, US may be running low on people eager for a shot

Chick-fil-A wants you to spend $2 not to go to Chick-fil-A

The choices that humans make aren't always the wisest. executive guide What is AI? Everything you need to know about Artificial Intelligence A guide to artificial intelligence, from machine learning and general AI to neural networks. Read More All too often, they're based on some mixture of self-regard, self-indulgence, and sheer laziness. You'd think, though, that if you really love a service, you'll remain loyal to it. I'm not so sure about that. Because here is the regular leader in truly human fast-food customer service deciding that it needs robotic help. We're speaking, with much reverence, of Chick-fil-A . This occasionally sanctimonious chicken chain is regularly at the summit of the American Customer Satisfaction Index . Its customer service humans are said to be exemplars of fine behavior. Yet here is the chain announcing that it's experimenting with robotic delivery. Specifically, the Kiwibot 4.0 . The chain told Restaurant … [Read more...] about Chick-fil-A wants you to spend $2 not to go to Chick-fil-A
