Google is rolling out a new April update for the Chromecast with Google TV that launched last year. It’s a fairly large update for a streaming device — totaling 166MB on my Chromecast — but includes numerous improvements. Once you’ve installed the new software and restarted your Chromecast, you’ll be able to dig a little deeper into video settings than was previously possible. In the new “advanced video controls” area of settings, you’re now given the ability to choose your preferred dynamic range format. Options include Dolby Vision, HDR, or even SDR if you want to keep it there. You can also manually switch to a ton of resolutions at various refresh rates from this menu: 4K (60Hz / 50Hz / 30Hz/ 25Hz / 24Hz / smpte) 1080p (60Hz / 50Hz / 24Hz) 720p (60Hz / 50Hz) 1080i (60Hz / 50Hz) 576p (50Hz) 480p (60Hz) Unless you’ve got a good reason to make a change, I’d keep it at whatever Chromecast selects as the default: that was 4K 60Hz in my case. Google says this update … [Read more...] about Google updates latest Chromecast with more HDR controls and improved Wi-Fi performance

We’ve only just been treated to the new DJI Air 2S , but fresh rumors are suggesting that DJI has an even more powerful drone up its sleeve this year – a DJI Mavic 3 Pro that’s capable of shooting 8K video. The rumor, which comes from a DroneDJ source, would see the Mavic 3 Pro become the first consumer drone capable of shooting 8K video and would likely succeed DJI’s current Mavic 2 Pro , which tops out at 4K/30p video. It’s worth noting that while DroneDJ has called its insider a “trusted source”, some of its sources have a mixed track record when it comes to DJI predictions. The information is also apparently based on Mavic 3 Pro prototypes being tested by DJI, one of which apparently has 8K/30p powers, so it’s far from certain that this will find its way into the final version. Check out our review of the Mavic Pro 2 These are the best drones of 2021 What about the best drones for beginners ? BARCELONA, Spain — At this year's Mobile World Congress, Samsung went all out. The company launched three wearable devices — Gear 2 , Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit — and its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5, as Samsung hinted in its invitations, focuses on everyday fitness. But one rumor that didn't materialize was the 4K screen. Instead, the S5 has a 5.1-inch, full HD Super AMOLED screen, but the phone is still a monster when it comes to hardware. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon, quad-core, 2.5GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 16/32GB of storage, a 16-megapixel camera on the back, a 2.1-megapixel one on the front and a 2,800mAh battery. See also: The Comparative Anatomy of the Xbox One vs. PlayStation 4 Samsung places great emphasis on the device's camera, which has an extremely fast auto-focus (up to 0.3 seconds) and a feature called real-time HDR, showing you an HDR effect on your photos and videos live in the preview as you take a shot. The camera also has … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S5 Scans Fingers, Doesn’t Fear Water
Apple's third-generation iPad includes decent camera hardware capable of shooting detailed, image-stabilized 1080p video. And its $5 iOS version of iMovie offers decent— if limited —editing capability. This leaves us wondering: can an iPad 3 be used as a complete portable HD production tool for families or other groups? We decided to find out, and were pleasantly surprised by the results. But while we think some users will be more than pleased with what they can achieve, we did discover some limitations along the way. In order to gauge the iPad's suitability as a capture, editing, and publishing tool, we conceived, shot, and edited a 4-minute video which we then published to YouTube. We know dogs aren't always as Internet-lovable as cats, but my dog Dita volunteered to star in our experiment—a short docudrama about eating breakfast. First, we'll repeat what we wrote in our third-generation iPad review when it comes to shooting 1080p video. The iPad 2 did fine while shooting … [Read more...] about With 1080p video and iMovie, can the new iPad be a one-stop HD video shop?
