Mobile gaming sensation Candy Crush is being accused of denying lives donated to players by their friends on Facebook, according to a federal class action lawsuit filed in March. Alina Renert, the main plaintiff, has been playing the game, created by King Digital , since 2014. Upon joining the craze, she connected Candy Crush to her Facebook. When players run out of lives, they can wait 30 minutes for new ones to appear. Or they can purchase a set of five lives for 99 cents. A third option exists, too: using an in-app option to ask Facebook friends to donate lives. Like many others players, Renert appealed to the masses. On multiple occasions, Renert's friends answered her pleas. If she exited the app and returned, however, she found her donated lives missing, according to the complaint. As a result, she immediately purchased new lives to continue playing. And Renert isn't alone. The complaint lists comments from many other players left on messages boards: Had 3 lives … [Read more...] about Candy Crush Saga sued for deleting ‘donated lives’

Move over Candy Crush, Trivia Crack is the new addiction
By Suzanne Woolley It's not exactly groundbreaking, but a game called Trivia Crack has millions of Americans addicted. Trivia Crack has raced past giant apps such as Facebook Messenger , as Facebook Messenger, Candy Crush Saga , and Instagram to claim the No. 1 spot for free apps in the US. User reviews suggest the app creates the kind of dependency its name implies. As one player tweeted recently, “I seriously wonder how many people # TriviaCrack (have) gotten fired since it became such a fad #triviacrackprobs.“ #triviacrackprobs.“ So where did this thing come from? Man hurts thumb playing Candy Crush
LOS ANGELES: In a bizarre case, a 29-year-old man in the US ruptured a tendon in his thumb after playing puzzle game ' Candy Crush ' on his smartphone non-stop for over a month. The medical condition of the man from California came to light after a report on his case was published in the medical journal 'Live Science.' The case is interesting because such injuries are usually quite painful, but the man appeared to not notice any pain while he played, according to the doctors who treated him. The case shows that, in a sense, video games may numb people's pain and contribute to video game addiction, they said. "We need to be aware that certain video games can act like digital painkillers," Dr Andrew Doan, a co-author of the case report and head of addictions research at the Naval Medical Center San Diego , was quoted as saying. "We have to be very cognizant that can be abused," Doan said. The man went to the doctor because his left thumb hurt and he was having trouble … [Read more...] about Man hurts thumb playing Candy Crush

Activision Blizzard buys Candy Crush maker King for $5.9 billion
Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard has bought King Digital Entertainment, the creator of mobile smash hit Candy Crush Saga, in a deal worth $5.9 billion. Describing the deal, King CEO Riccardo Zacconi said that his company had built one of the largest networks of players on Facebook and on mobile devices, noting that King's games had 474 million monthly active users in the third quarter of 2015. Activision already owns one of the biggest gaming franchises in Call of Duty, in addition to Destiny and huge properties such as World of WarCraft and StarCraft as a result of its merger with Blizzard in 2008. The company's gaming portfolio grows even bigger with the addition of the biggest name in social gaming, but there's no guarantee King will be able to keep up its success forever. The Financial Times notes that although the company — founded in Sweden and now headquartered in the Republic of Ireland — has tried to reduce its reliance on the Candy Crush … [Read more...] about Activision Blizzard buys Candy Crush maker King for $5.9 billion
