I have to admit that I’d never given much thought about driving Ford Mustangs. Or any American muscle car in general. They’re not my typical go-to, but as I’ve just had one for a weekend, I must say that I think I need to go back and reassess some stuff. In short, I really liked it. I had a 2018 Ford Mustang GT with the Performance Package Level 2 for a few days. It’s that option that slots above the Performance Pack Level 1 and below the wholly performance-oriented Shelby GT350. And the PP2 is offered exclusively on GTs with the six-speed manual, so I was happily rowing my own gears for a change. Noise comes from a naturally aspirated, 5.0-liter V8 that spits out 460 horsepower. Other options include Recaro seats and a performance exhaust. The final sticker price comes to $50,285. We here at Roadshow love all the advancements we're seeing as we head to full-on self-driving cars. Sure, the tech isn't there yet, but manufacturers are on their way with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist systems becoming more and more common every year. Heck, some cars even have automated steering options available. Now Playing: Watch this: Semi-automated driving is made cheap and easy with George... 6:45 George Hotz, however, feels manufacturers aren't moving fast enough. Hotz, the 28-year-old CEO of Comma.ai, is promising to bring smarter cars to the masses with Openpilot, his open-source, Level 2, partial-automation, affordable add-on hardware. Neither Hotz nor Comma.ai is claiming Openpilot offers fully autonomous capability. On the contrary, this system is designed to be assistive tech, essentially, a partially automated commute smoother.Last time we met, Hotz stayed in the driver's seat of an Acura ILX, but this time, I'm sitting in the left seat in a … [Read more...] about Hands on with Comma.ai’s add-on Level 2 autonomous tech
Not all adaptive cruise control and lane keeping systems are created equal. That should be obvious, but in case it isn't, recent tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety will serve as proof. On Tuesday, IIHS published the results of some road and track testing with several different makes of vehicle, measuring how well each was able to stay within its lane around corners and up hills. steering, braking, and accelerating for themselves but only with an engaged human driver behind the wheel who is responsible for providing situational awareness. The vehicles (and advanced driver assistance systems) that IIHS tested were a 2017 BMW 5 Series (Driving Assistant Plus), 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class *Drive Pilot), 2018 Tesla Model 3 (Autopilot 8.1), 2016 Tesla Model S (Autopilot 7.1), and 2018 Volvo S90 (Pilot Assist). IIHS notes that each had previously been scored highly for their automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems. A series of track tests was used to establish how each … [Read more...] about Not all level 2 driver assists are equal, IIHS finds after testing

Pricing for the 2019 Audi A8 has just been announced ahead of its US launch, but when the German luxury brand's flagship sedan hits dealers this fall, an important piece of hotly awaited technology won't be available: Traffic Jam Pilot. The automaker had been planning to sell its new full-size flagship in the United States with Traffic Jam Pilot, the auto industry's first production conditionally automated Level 3 hardware. However, Audi says that a quagmire of legal, infrastructural and consumer issues in the States are hampering the rollout of this technology.Traffic Jam Pilot, which combines the passenger car industry's first production lidar scanner with next-generation sensor fusion and processing power (including key built-in redundancies in the event of component failures) would likely have been the most advanced partially automated-drive system on the market, besting systems like Cadillac's Super Cruise and Tesla's Autopilot. As a Level 3 system, TJP provides a hands-off, … [Read more...] about Why the 2019 Audi A8 won’t get Level 3 Traffic Jam Pilot in the US
