Now Playing: Watch this: Porsche's AR glasses help us fix a car in cyberspace 3:07 While virtual reality continues to sadly flounder, loved by few but ignored by most, augmented reality at least is taking off. With support for the technology, which can draw virtual images over the real world, available in all modern smartphones, it's easy to start dropping digital furniture in your living room or virtual Stormtroopers in your selfies.Porsche was an early adopter of the tech, releasing an app that lets you drive a little Mission E around your living room and even sit inside the virtual cockpit. Now, the company is bringing a somewhat more hardened experience to its dealerships through a system it calls Tech Live Look.Tech Live Look is a pair of glasses that, upon first glance, gave me flashbacks to my time spent wearing that most famous of augmented reality headsets, Google Glass. However, the implementation here is quite different. Porsche's glasses, created by ODG, rely … [Read more...] about Augmented reality: Coming to a Porsche dealership near you

It's strangely exhilarating. In this virtual-reality simulation, the snake isn't real, but the feeling in your chest is. In addition to seeing the snake through a virtual-reality headset strapped to your face, you're wearing a jacket filled with airbags that mimics the pressure and vibrations of a serpent moving across your body. The jacket is meant to give a heightened sensation that goes beyond playing a video game or watching a movie. All the talk about virtual reality revolutionizing the gaming industry is “just first-day stuff,” says VR expert Peter Rubin. Forget 360-degree video and video games, he says. That’s just the beginning, and focusing too much on these uses takes away from the true potential of VR: a social technology to bring us together. Rubin is a journalist at Wired and the author of Future Presence: How Virtual Reality Is Changing Human Connection, Intimacy, and the Limits of Ordinary Life, out today from HarperCollins. The Verge spoke to Rubin about VR intimacy, its social powers and downsides, and why VR porn is surprisingly quaint. The interview has been lightly edited for clarity. Virtual reality is advancing quickly, but I wouldn’t say it’s mainstream yet. What are the biggest obstacles to mass adoption? A huge part of it is technological, but I don’t think it’s technological in the sense of issues like simulator sickness. When you get above the level … [Read more...] about Why the real promise of virtual reality is to change human connection
Plex is one of the best ways to store and stream all your movies and TV shows around your house or apartment, but movie night is still a bit of drag if you’re watching on a dingy old laptop or a small TV. Now you can experience Plex on a giant screen without leaving the couch, thanks to the company’s new virtual reality app for Samsung’s Gear VR. Plex VR originally launched earlier this year for Google’s Daydream headset, but it’s now available for Samsung’s headset as well. The Gear VR works with any high-end Galaxy smartphone: Samsung’s Galaxy S9, S9+, Note8, S8, S8+, S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6 edge+, S6, S6 edge, A8, A8+) Though you don’t need the fancy Gear VR Remote to watch your Plex collection in VR, it will make things a little easier. If you have your smartphone and Gear VR headset ready, you’re halfway there; on the software side, you’ll also need the Plex VR app and Plex Media Server version 1.8.1 or later. Boot up the … [Read more...] about Watch Your Plex Library in Virtual Reality With Gear VR

For the past five days, I’ve spent nearly as much time in virtual reality as real reality. My calves ache and my neck is sore, but all in all I’ve had a pretty good time. I’ve been using the Vive, an ambitious new virtual reality system created by HTC and Valve. With the Vive set up in my living room, I’ve been everywhere from outer space to Aperture Science’s stark white labs to a quiet beach where I just sat on the ground and listened to the waves. Like, I actually sat on the ground. With my own butt. The Basics Valve and HTC’s Vive is the most immediately impressive (and imposing) VR headset on the market. It comes with a price to match: $800. For comparison’s sake, the Oculus Rift is $600, though it will get touch controllers later this year that will probably bring it a lot closer to the Vive in terms of price and functionality. PlayStation VR will come in a $500 bundle when it launches later this year. And of course, the Vive’s … [Read more...] about The Valve-Backed HTC Vive Is Virtual Reality At Its Best And Worst
So you just bought a new PC VR system. Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, whichever. You’ve plugged it in, adjusted the cameras, cleared out some room, and you’re ready to play some games. Which are the best? This list works a little bit differently from our other “Bests” posts. It focuses on PC VR, which includes games for both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. All of the games on this list will work on the Rift, but several were funded or published by Oculus and won’t work natively on the Vive. Fortunately, almost all of those can be made to work with Vive thanks to the Revive project. There’s enough cross-compatibility that a combined PC list makes sense, at least for now. Sony’s PlayStation VR has its own distinct game library, so we’re treating that system as its own separate thing. We’ve capped our list at 12 games, and will be updating this post as new VR games come out. Superhot VR takes the bullet-dodging, balletic action of … [Read more...] about The 12 Best PC Virtual Reality Games
As digital technology continues to seep into every aspect of our analog lives, it seems it was only a matter of time before it started to replace our plain old visual experiences with something a little more tantalizing. Head-mounted displays, or HMDs, are an almost ancient piece of tech which have begun to see a reboot in the past few years as computers get more powerful, and the games inside them more visually spectacular by the day. In this article, we’re going to cut through the noise and give you the basics of the HMD revolution. We’ll cover the terms you need to know, the history of where they came from, and how far the technology might be taking us next. So if boring old regular reality just isn’t enough anymore, maybe it’s time to take a dip into the world of the virtual and see where you end up on the other side. Seeing Things Differently: a (Brief) History of HMDs Back in the 1960’s, a cinematographer named Morton Heilig had a crazy idea: what if … [Read more...] about Head Mounted Displays: What’s the Difference between Augmented and Virtual Reality?
