This summer the easing of coronavirus stay-at-home restrictions means you might get to spend some time at the beach or the park after all. Even so, the resumption of normal life won't happen all at once . Chances are you're still going to be at home more than usual and, yes, watching more TV than ever. And now Samsung has a TV that lets you do it on the veranda. Dubbed The Terrace, the new QLED television starts at a hefty $3,500 for the 55-inch size and goes up from there. That's roughly four times the price of an equivalent indoor Samsung TV and 10 times as much as budget models cost, but for the outlay you'll get something designed from the ground up to survive outdoors. The Terrace is water- and dust-resistant, rated to IP 55 -- enough to withstand "contact with harmful dust" and "low-pressure water projected from a nozzle." For reference, the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra are both rated higher, to IP 68, but to be … [Read more...] about Samsung’s The Terrace costs $3,500. Every TV you can buy these days is oriented for horizontal, "landscape mode" images, but numerous phone apps work best with vertical images, also known as portrait mode. One of the most popular such apps is video-sharing social network TikTok , home of pasta recipes , happy animals and election misinformation . Samsung says most of its 2021 smart TVs will get a TikTok app in the US later this year, as part of the company's global partnership with TikTok announced in its Unbox and Discover event. The app launched on Samsung TVs in the UK last year and the company says it will come to other markets later in 2021. Every Samsung TV will get the app but two models are uniquely positioned (pun intended) to take advantage of vertical video. The Sero, launched last year in the US , is a TV whose screen can actually rotate from landscape into portrait mode and back, thanks to a built-in motor. Samsung says TikTok's video will "fit perfectly" on the TV in … [Read more...] about Samsung TikTok app for smart TVs coming soon to the US

Vizio today filed its S-1 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission as the TV and soundbar maker heads toward an initial public offering. “We envision the Vizio smart TV as the center of the connected home — where families play games together, where friends watch movies together, where work and learning happen, and where all things in between take place,” Vizio founder, chairman, and CEO William Wang wrote in a letter that opens the S-1. “Going public is an important milestone for us as we continue to grow and execute our goals.” The filing reveals that Vizio has sold over 80 million TVs and 11 million soundbars since the company’s founding. It sold 7.1 million TVs in 2020. Netflix, the undisputed king of full-season TV binge-viewing, is now preparing for battle with networks, along with cable and satellite providers, on a new front: in-season binge-watching. Currently, viewers can easily watch previous full-seasons of a series via Netflix or other streaming providers like Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus. A recent Nielsen study found that 88% of Netflix users engage in binge-viewing, defined as watching three or more episodes of the same TV show in a single day. The practice has in turn helped boost ratings for shows like Breaking Bad and Scandal . But when it comes to binge-watching a show’s current season, options are very limited. The studio’s deals with Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu Plus usually cap the number of current episodes a network can offer via video on demand (VOD) at five. So if viewers want to binge, unless they purchase individual episodes via iTunes or Amazon on Demand, they must wait until the summer when the whole season becomes … [Read more...] about Netflix’s Next Big Battle: In-Season Binge-Watching
