Razer enters audio glasses arena with Anzu eyewear

Audio glasses are quickly becoming a thing. Last year Bose followed its original Frames with three second-generation models, including the sporty Tempo Fames , and Amazon is selling the second-generation of its Echo Frames while plenty of others, like Razer, are now jumping in on the "smart" glasses action. The Razer Anzer , which comes in round and square versions in two different size options, is available now for $200 (£200, AU$320). I haven't tried them yet but their design (at least the square version) and specs don't appear to be so different from other models I've tried. The small size weighs 43 grams while the large weighs 48 grams (the Echo Frames are 31 grams by comparison). The glasses include 35% blue light filtering lenses along with a set of polarized sunglasses lenses (you can easily swap them in), have touch controls and integrated 16mm speaker drivers that fire directional sound toward your open ears. See it at Best Buy They're IPX4 … [Read more...] about Razer enters audio glasses arena with Anzu eyewear

The best open wireless earbuds that aren’t AirPods

So-called "open" earbuds like the standard Apple Airpods have their pluses and minuses. On the plus side, they tend to slip easily into your ear -- you don't have to worry about getting a tight seal from a silicon tip -- and their design offers a comfortable fit. On the downside, they may not fit some ears securely, they let sound in and they tend to have weaker bass due to their non-noise-isolating design. But if you're a runner or biker who wants to hear the outside world or just someone who doesn't like having an ear tip jammed into your ear canal, sealing it off, an open-style bud is an ideal choice. Apple's AirPods a certainly an option -- they cost around $130 with the standard charging case -- but they don't fit everybody's ears securely and there are plenty of good alternatives, some of them cheaper. Here's a look at the top open-style buds. I'll update this list as I test more worthy candidates. Best audio glasses and sunglasses for 2021

Audio glasses, which have integrated micro speakers and a Bluetooth connection, are proliferating. Bose is leading the way with its Frames audio sunglasses . Amazon is also in the game with its Echo Frames , now on their second generation. A host of other companies, many of which are no-name Chinese manufacturers, have released audio glasses in recent months. Some are geared toward everyday use, allowing you to forego headphones and stealthily listen to audio on the go, while others are designed for runners and bikers who want to leave their ears open to the world for safety reasons. The truth is, most audio sunglasses don't sound good and many sound downright bad, including and especially those that use bone-conduction technology instead of traditional audio drivers. The glasses' tiny embedded speakers fire audio into your ears and that audio tends to be lacking in the bass and clarity department. The sound is typically on par with what a pair of free earbuds you'd get on a … [Read more...] about Best audio glasses and sunglasses for 2021

Texas cold snap froze cleanup efforts at some Superfund sites

Texas’ deep freeze was the latest warning that extreme weather events threaten to derail efforts to clean up the most toxic sites in the US. In a worst-case scenario, a natural disaster can unleash buried toxic substances. But even minimal damage or the mere threat of a storm can stop or slow cleanup efforts. That vulnerability could become a bigger problem as climate change brings about more weather-related disasters. For years, experts have pushed the Environmental Protection Agency to prepare for the onslaught. “We have over two dozen Superfund sites here in our county, and we are one of the most threatened coasts in the world by natural forces,” says Jackie Young-Medcalf, executive director of the Houston-based nonprofit Texas Health and Environment Alliance. “As long as the waste remains in place … It’s at risk for impacts from Mother Nature.” Efforts to control hazards at some toxic Superfund sites in Texas temporarily halted as a result of the deep freeze that battered … [Read more...] about Texas cold snap froze cleanup efforts at some Superfund sites
