Hell hath no fury like a man who thinks he’s being held accountable. At least, that appears to be what’s happening for many men in response to a now-viral new ad by Gillette. The 30-second spot (also cut as a one-minute-and-48-second short film) raises questions of accountability, toxic vs. “traditional” masculinity, corporate influence, and pandering in the “culture wars” (as referenced by the Washington Post), the impact of the #MeToo movement. Most significantly, it presents reframing of the well-known tagline, “The Best a Man Can Get.” “Is this the best a man can get?” the ad, which was released on Sunday, asks. This pointed question is bolstered by, of course, a new and era-appropriate hashtag: #TheBestMenCanBe. It’s a provocative new spin on the phrase the men’s grooming brand first debuted in their 1989 Super Bowl XXIII ad—though, like me, you may have thought it was even older. (I really can’t … [Read more...] about The Best Men Can Be? Gillette Poses a New Challenge—but Can Men Accept It?

I spent Monday evening immersed in what’s probably now my fifth run through the entire series of The Office (U.S.), and like most superb shows or movies watched countless times, each go-around, I notice something new. Last night, my girlfriend picked up on a bit that she, nor I, ever saw before: Creed, the eccentric weirdo of the group, blogs—like me!—about cars. (Spoiler alerts ahead, if you really haven’t watched this show yet.) The emergence of Creed’s fascination with cars comes amid the memorable season 3 episode “Beach Games,” after Pam—having walked across a set of fiery coals stupidly put into place by Michael as part of a hapless effort to pick his successor—finally confesses to Jim that she called off her wedding with Roy because of him. It’s a big moment in the show, especially since Jim—by then—had been dating Karen for some time, and Karen happened to be sitting next to Jim at the moment Pam decided … [Read more...] about Creed From The Office Wants to Know: ‘What Do You Think Is the Best Kind of Car?’

A semi-trailer truck carrying a shipment of Axe Body Spray caught fire near Interstate 35 in Belton, Texas on Friday morning, resulting in cans of the deodorant exploding and spraying across the street. Per KCEN, the Axe explosion did not result in hordes of women in bikinis converging on the area as advertised, but it did shut down part of Interstate 35 from shortly after the Bell County Sheriff’s Department received a call around 3:39am local time to just before noon. No injuries were reported, which is very lucky, because videos of the incident posted online show that the cans of pressurized body spray really started one hell of a fire. The truck did not fare as well, and local media posted footage of the road covered in countless burnt-out Axe cans. According to the Temple Daily Telegram, at its peak the fire was “throwing cans of Axe body spray onto nearby streets and drawing spectators who watched the roaring flames.” No word on how bad the flaming heap of … [Read more...] about Truck Full of Axe Body Spray Catches Fire, Sprays Exploding Cans Everywhere
Call it an Axe-ident.A truck filled with cans of Axe body spray caught fire on Interstate 35 in Belton, Texas, on Friday, and the aerosol cans began to explode, the Austin American-Statesman reported. No one was injured, WDRB-TV reported, although the highway was shut down for hours. But this wouldn't be making national news if it were just any product accident. This was Axe, (known in the UK and Australia as Lynx), which has an oft-mocked public image of being a strong-smelling product overused by teen boys desperate to attract dates. So of course, Twitter users immediately recognized something smelled funny. And one Twitter user is predicting the explosion could turn up in a future comic book. … [Read more...] about Truck full of Axe body spray explodes, and Twitter smells a joke
