Google did face trouble getting pole attachments in Austin, Texas, where AT&T owns about 20 percent of the utility poles. AT&T claimed in late 2013 that Google did not qualify as a telecom or cable provider and thus did not have the right to attach to AT&T's poles. The companies apparently negotiated an agreement, as Google is now getting ready to offer fiber service in Austin. … [Read more...] about Cable lobby says Google Fiber doesn’t need Title II to get pole access

Turn your desktop into an invisible wireless charging pad and get a $35 power bank for free
Years ago, when I first imagined wireless charging, my imagination pictured something a lot more like the Kew Labs UTS-1 than the ugly charging pucks and pads we routinely use these days. Instead of placing your phone on the equivalent of an electronic coaster, the UTS-1 attaches to the underside of your desk, so there's nothing visible on top. Just put your phone on the tabletop and it starts charging. As Arthur C. Clarke famously said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." The UTS-1 must be sufficiently advanced, because it looks like magic. And right now, Kew Labs is offering an exclusive deal for CNET readers. Buy the $105 UTS-1 and get the company's snazzy 10,000-mAh power bank for free, which is a $35 value. That's the equivalent of getting 25% off. … [Read more...] about Turn your desktop into an invisible wireless charging pad and get a $35 power bank for free
A year into coronavirus, we’re still counting the dead
After a year of covering this, grappling with the pain this tiny virus is causing hasn’t gotten any easier. Every obituary to a life lost is still a heartbreak. I still tear up when I see the joy of a nurse getting vaccinated. I still ache for the living whose lives have been upended by crisis for a year or more. Overall, I’m still going, and so are all of you. We’re still not there yet, but we can hope that the road ahead of us is shorter and smoother than the one we’ve just come down. … [Read more...] about A year into coronavirus, we’re still counting the dead
One week with Apple Fitness Plus: Beating my lockdown weight gain
My goal is weight loss, primarily, but I'd like to be stronger and fitter too. So which classes do I choose? Will a HIIT class be better than a cycle class? Will a core workout help me more than a strength workout? Should I be combining multiple classes in one session, and if so, are some better to do together than others? I know it's not good to overwork certain muscle groups at once, but I also don't know enough about what's involved in each class to make those decisions. … [Read more...] about One week with Apple Fitness Plus: Beating my lockdown weight gain
Ghosts of Soviet aviation at the Riga Aviation Museum
Latvian labor of loveThe Riga Aviation Museum exists almost entirely because of one man, Victor Talpa, the gentleman I unknowingly met as I entered the museum. He's the founder, the curator and the manager, making it pretty much a one man show. That makes the museum all the more impressive. The Baltic winters have certainly taken their toll on some of the aircraft, almost transitioning the museum to more of a boneyard, but not quite. That doesn't make it any less interesting. Really, it's like another world weaving your way through aging Soviet aircraft. … [Read more...] about Ghosts of Soviet aviation at the Riga Aviation Museum
