Microsoft rumored to reveal Surface Book 3, Surface Go 2 this spring

Microsoft may have new hardware up its sleeve. The tech giant is rumored to host an event this spring to reveal a new Surface Book 3 laptop and Surface Go 2 tablet. Both products are expected to get internal and external upgrades, though they won't be getting major overhauls, according to a report Friday from Brad Sams with tech sites Petri and Thurrott . The Surface Book 3 will reportedly be powered by a 10th-generation Intel processor and a Nvidia GTX 16 series graphics card . The top-end Surface Book may also have an option for a Nvidia Quadro card, according to Sams, citing people familiar with Microsoft's plans. The Surface Go is a more portable but less powerful version of Microsoft's Surface tablet. The Surface Go 2 will reportedly be powered by an Intel Pentium Gold processor, though there may also be an option for a Core M processor. It's unclear how much the new devices may cost. The Surface Book 2 started at $1,499 for the 13-inch and $2,499 for … [Read more...] about Microsoft rumored to reveal Surface Book 3, Surface Go 2 this spring

Graves of nearly 600 cats and dogs in ancient Egypt may be world’s oldest pet cemetery

By David Grimm Feb. 26, 2021 , 10:45 AM The cats and dogs lie as if asleep, in individual graves. Many wore collars or other adornments, and they had been cared for through injury and old age, like today’s pets. But the last person to bury a beloved animal companion in this arid Egyptian land on the coast of the Red Sea did so nearly 2000 years ago. The site, located in the early Roman port of Berenice, was found a decade ago, but its purpose was mysterious. Now a detailed excavation has unearthed the burials of nearly 600 cats and dogs, along with the strongest evidence yet that these animals were treasured pets. That would make the site the oldest known pet cemetery, the authors argue, suggesting that the modern concept of pets wasn’t alien to the ancient world. “I’ve never encountered a cemetery like this,” says Michael MacKinnon, a zooarchaeologist at the University of Winnipeg who has studied the role of animals across the bygone Mediterranean but was not involved with … [Read more...] about Graves of nearly 600 cats and dogs in ancient Egypt may be world’s oldest pet cemetery

Hermeus announces plan to build the fastest aircraft in the world

A new aerospace company has entered the race to provide supersonic commercial air travel. On Monday, a US-based company named Hermeus announced plans to develop an aircraft that will travel at speeds of up to Mach 5. Such an aircraft would cut travel time from New York to Paris from more than 7 hours to 1.5 hours. Hermeus said it has raised an initial round of funding led by Khosla Ventures, but it declined to specify the amount. This funding will allow Hermeus to develop a propulsion demonstrator and other initial technologies needed to make its supersonic aircraft a reality, Skyler Shuford, the company's chief operating officer, told Ars. Space Sex Geckos Dead on Reentry, Russia Reveals

The five heroic sex geckos sent into space on July 19 to study sexual reproduction in zero gravity died before returning to Earth on Monday, Russian officials said. It is unclear what they died of, or whether the intrepid geckos ever mated in space. Their tiny, partially mummified bodies were found within their enclosure aboard the small Foton-M4 spacecraft at the conclusion of their mission. "All geckos, unfortunately, died," the Russian Space Agency said in a statement. "The date and conditions of their deaths will be determined by specialists." Communication was restored within a few days. But the satellite did change its orbital trajectory during that … [Read more...] about Space Sex Geckos Dead on Reentry, Russia Reveals
